Wet snow could freeze overnight, making Friday morning travel tough
JANESVILLE—As wet, sloppy snow piles up this evening forecasters are warning that plummeting temperatures could will lead to weather and road conditions worsening overnight and into Friday. The city of Janesville has declared a snow emergency beginning at 6 p.m. today.
Rock County 911 dispatch reports no major increase in vehicle slide-offs and crashes this afternoon. But forecasters say freezing temperatures later tonight could turn slushy snow on the roads to ice, especially on lesser-traveled secondary roads.
Ed Townsend, a meteorologist at the Sullivan office of the National Weather Service said that much of Rock and Walworth counties can expect between 4 and 5 inches of snowfall through the evening and overnight.
He said far eastern areas of Walworth County could get up to 8 inches of snow.
Townsend said temperatures should hold steady around freezing until late this evening. He said will likely mean that wet, heavy snow will continue throughout the night.
That snow will later freeze as temperatures drop to around 20 overnight. Townsend said that wind chill will make it feel more like 10 degrees Friday morning.
Townsend said that motorists should give themselves more time than usual Friday morning, especially if they plan to travel on secondary roadways.
In Janesville, all parked vehicles must be removed from streets and public parking lots from 6 p.m. tonight until snow plowing is complete. People should park in their garage, driveway or designated snow emergency parking areas.
The city has said violators will be ticketed, even during the hours prior to plow operations.
Stalls are located in seven downtown municipal parking lots:
- East Wall Street lot at East Wall Street and North Parker Drive.
- Municipal Building lot at West Wall Street and North Jackson Street.
- South High Street lot at West Court Street and South High Street.
- Senior Center lot at St. Lawrence Avenue and Water Street.
- Hedberg Public Library lot on Water Street.
- River/Union Street lot at South River Street and Union Street.
- North Parker Drive parking ramp at North Parker Drive and East Wall Street
Look for the signs designating the snow emergency parking stalls.
