Angela Rhodes out as humane society director

JANESVILLE The Rock County Humane Society Board of Directors announced this morning that embattled Executive Director Angela Rhodes is no longer with the organization.

“The board of directors is currently evaluating their options and will be pursing candidates to fill the critical role of executive director,” a press release from the humane society reads.

It does not elaborate about the circumstances of Rhodes leaving.

“The board and staff have always been committed to exceptional animal care,” the news release said. “However, other important factors such as customer service and donor relations have fallen short.”

Rhodes had been with the humane society since 2009. The relationship between local municipalities and the human society have grown increasingly tense.

The humane society changed its policies regarding what animals it would take. In addition, it was also asking for more funding.

“Moving forward, the board and staff are committed to finding forever homes for pets, mending customer relations and forging solid partnerships with our donors,” the news release reads.

What a cruel comment concerning putting the dogs and cats at RCHS to sleep. A rescued dog can be your best friend, as is mine. I adopted Maggie May in May, 2009. She was owner released as unfriendly and untrainable. Also, RCHS charged her previous owner $50 to take her. I paid $125 to adopt her.

She is a certified therapy dog/tail waggin' tutor who works with children at Jefferson Grade School as well as the Milton Public Library and Hedberg Public Library. She's a valuable member of our community and is working with her students to improve their reading, grades and self-esteem.

Whatever becomes of the RCHS, I pray that the needs and best interest of the animals are met with respect and dignity. After all, it wasn't their choice to be there.

I'm with you Vegi, it seems the problem might be the BOARD!

Once again saxcat sticks her paw in her mouth. Both the RCHS and the Dane Co HS are PRIVATELY run groups...NOT GOVERNMENT....geshhh!

I, for one, would like to thank Ms. Rhodes for her years of service in caring for our lost and stray pets. Thank You. Right now, the RCHS is having a Valentine's Day pledge drive of sorts, so send in your donations.

Who put yada in charge of limiting public comment? S/he admits to not knowing something, so they should 'shut 'er down'.

This is the chance for the RCHS to make the changes needed, and turn things around. There is no reason animals need to be transported to Dane county.

Wasnt the problem not only the cost to cities, but also the HS saying that they would not be in the buisness of taking in strays?. I believe that is why several cities looked elsewhere and then chastised by Rhodes in her letters, and she was shocked that they were going to DCHS.

Saxcat70, again you are an uninformed poster. These shelters, including RCHS, run on donations given by people who want to see animals treated fairly and humane. Find them another home.Try to make sure animals get spayed so we DON"T have an unwanted population explosion, which would be bad for our communities. So wake up and smell the coffee, they DO NOT USE your taxpayer money. They provide a benefit to the community, more than what can be probably said about you. So you can crawl back in your bunker and wait for the day you can "put down" them Gov'ment traitors!

The Gazette should CLOSE comments on this story. I do not know the lady that was terminated from her job, but feel it's time to shut down the comments on this one.

sport3456 - empty cages translates to the ignoring of many animals in need of rescue. I was under the impression that the humane society was run by the government (with the unfriendly and arrogant help they had working there) but now I understand it is a private company of sorts. If that is true, then there is no excuse for having the employees that they have.

With being an active volunteer with another rescue in Rock County, I know there are many cats and dogs that need help. RCHS stopped picking up strays in Rock County and animals are being taken to Dane County by local municipalities because of the excessive amount RCHS was going to charge, there aren't many cats and dogs available for adoption locally. People interested would have to go to Dane County to adopt. Currently 14 cats and 5 dogs up for adoption on RCHS's web page. I've adopted twice from RCHS (one when Chris was the director; the second time shortly after Angela became director).

someone here enlighten me.Why are empty cages a bad thing?I remember when they had so many cats they had no where to put them. Some of you people sound like the the RCHS is suppose to keep a certain amount of stock on the shelves for you to choose from like a department store. As far as Chris goes,I believe she was well liked, but wasn't one of the reasons the board dismissed her was that she made it so difficult to adopt an animal that they ended up with a lobby full of full cages.

Did you see Channel 3 television at 6 pm. Interviewed someone at RCHS who was standing in front of all empty cat cages in the lobby area. How terrible and how sad. Don't know if RCHS can be saved or not. The board needs to take responsibility for what's happened. According to news release on RCHS web site, the board is going to take an "active" roll ... isn't that what they should have been doing? Maybe they could bring Chris back who was executive director before Angela Rhodes. She was well liked and did a good job.

I was in there 4 months ago checking out the dogs,I took a liking to one. I wanted to go out to play with it in the yard. I have never been so insulted like I was that day,the young ladies treated me like I was a child ! Don't do this don't do that, sounds trivial but you had to be in my shoes. I have been around dogs all of my life and know what to and what not to do with them. If they treat everyone like this ,they are in big trouble. The worst customer service I have ever encountered,if this is a direct result of the management, they all need to be rid of.

How did it ever get to this point? I certainly hope things turn around and hope that Angela wasn't acting in cohort with a board that let her take the fall and the blame for everything.

It's about time! As I stated in a previous post, we adopted 3 great animals from RCHS before Ms. Rhodes took over. The staff was friendly and helpful and there was an abundance of animals to choose from. We stopped back several years ago and the staff was extremely rude and there were only a handful of dogs available for adoption and only about 20 cats. From that point on I stopped supporting RCHS. I am not surprised one bit that communities in Rock County have contracted with DCHS for services. I am also not surprised that Mounds also told them to take a hike. I think the board members need to visit other facilities (such as DCHS and GCHS) to see why they are successful and RCHS is not.
