Planned Parenthood to close 4 Wisconsin centers

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Planned Parenthood announced plans Monday to close four of its 27 clinics in Wisconsin due to a lack of state funding.

Clinics in Beaver Dam, Johnson Creek, Chippewa Falls and Shawano will close between April and July, Planned Parenthood leaders said. The closures are the direct consequence of the Legislature eliminating $1 million in state funding for the group in the last budget, said Teri Huyck, president and chief executive officer of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin.

That money was earmarked for women’s health care services Planned Parenthood offered in nine counties. None of the clinics being closed offered abortions. State law prohibits state money from being used to pay for abortions, unless medically necessary.

Without the state money, the clinics could not afford to stay open, Huyck said.

Each of the four clinics had been open for years. The Beaver Dam site, which opened in 1977, was the oldest and the one in Johnson Creek, which opened in 1999, is the newest.

Planned Parenthood said the closures will affect services such as cancer screenings, breast exams, birth control, STD testing and treatment, and HIV screening provided to 2,000 patients.

"The closing of these four clinics isn’t a ‘win’ for the pro-life community,“ said Democratic state Rep. Chris Taylor of Madison, a former Planned Parenthood employee. "It’s a loss to women who relied on those clinics for lifesaving cervical and breast cancer screenings, safe family planning services and other health care needs. As a result, there will be women whose health and lives are threatened.“

As long as you double talkers keep mixing Planned Parenthoods women's health care with their support of abortions, you will keep getting cut and closed. We are done playing games with you idiots. They were specifically told not to be conducting/funding and referring for abortions or they would loose their funding. They kept it up....so these are the consequences. Establish a track record of abandoning this practice and we can get back to discussing their efforts to do women's health care screenings and other worthwhile service.

like I said before, joker..I hope no one in your family ever needs the services that Planned Parenthood provides...because people like you will ostracize them for being humans in need...

joker...you're joking? you said you didn't want your tax money used for services like PP, so women in need of health services should go to the emergency room for sexual health services and regular health screenings...you do know they'd be turned away because they're not emergency issues...Planned Parenthood provides services to low income women, and most clinics do not, not without insurance unless you're already part of the program, and then they only cover so much...and Obamacare doesn't take effect for at least another year, and Walker turned away federal money for health services and Walkers plan will cut health services to a lot of people...and saying they'll be able to get insurance through another plan doesn't cut the mustard...these people already can't afford insurance and that's why their on Badgercare now...what do you think will happen when the state plans take effect? more people needing places like PP for their health care, not less...btw..are you a doctor or a health care provider? my family is in medicine, so I know from inside the system that closing PP will be a disaster for women in Wisconsin...

partirican. Where did I ever say I don't believe low income women don't deserve health care. Nowhere! Dont you think there are multiple places they can recieve it. Ever go to an emergency room. Though not the place to go for routine stuff they do still treat the serious instances on the taxpayers dime. Obamacare. how about doctors of mercy. Why PP Planned parenthood which in my mind stands for(unplanned parenthood) how can we get out of it. This is why I disagree with PP. I am all for cancer sreening, flu shots, checking for STDS. but that can be done at any clinic. Multiple duplician of services is one of the problems of the healthcare system. For the most part they do nothing except refer you to someone more qualified. Why not go where the qualified people are to begin with? Why should the taxpayers pay for referals.

joker-so you don't believe low-income women deserve sexual health care? why is that? I hope no one in your family ever needs the services PP provides...our population is OUT OF CONTROL, and needs to be put in check...btw-I'm all in favor of limiting family size and heavily taxing those who don't comply...

and we don't get to pick and choose what services we get except for when we vote...I don't want to pay into Social Security, because it will not be there for me when I retire, but I don't have the option to not pay into the system...

why is it not our responsibility to help others in need? shouldn't we treat people the way we want to be treated? with dignity and respect...

partirican1, Just like it is their decision it should also be mine if I want to fund (donate to it) it should not be taken from my paycheck. If you like this service donate to it yourself. Don't take my hardwork to pay for something I do not believe in.

duhnaw-I already do...every time I vote and pay taxes at the end of the year...so what, in your or anyone elses opinion, makes it OK to take funding away from desperately needed public health services for women? fear of birth control? fear of population control (the big elephant in the room no one wants to talk about)? fear of sexually active people?...because all the data points to access to family planning and preventive services decreases unwanted pregnancy and slows the spread of STD's-regardless of religious beliefs or moral objection...how is this bad?

And just think, the UW misplaced 33 million and lost another 1.1 million in a payroll glitch (embezzlement). If a 1 million dollar cut in funding closes 4 PP centers, this waste is the equivalent of about 136 PP centers. Why didn't you complainers say something about that? Start blaming the people who are actually wasting the taxpayer money instead of the guy who needs to make the tough decisions when we don't have the money.

Obamacare/Badgercare should cover what PP does now starting in 2014. Everyone will have insurance. What will PP's future be? Abortions & condom distribution?

I have a full time job and make 20,000 a year. The company I work for does not offer insurance. So I rely on family planning clinics for my yearly pap smears and check ups. 10 years ago they helped me when I found lumps in my breasts. I would never have been able to afford having them removed and tested if it hadn't been for organizations like this. People are going to have sex like it or not, so wouldn't you rather be having them receive discounted birth control then pay for the child that can't afford? Just abortions and pills huh? Why don't you go visit one before you bad mouth it.

Sure ! Everybody has a car and can easily travel to the surrounding communities for care . That's like thinking everyone has a drivers license and that people have no trouble getting to the DMV for picture IDs. There are people who are poor and getting poorer in this country . The harsh reality is that just saying or thinking they'll be OK doesn't mean they will be . But just keep telling yourself that. I find it ironic that some medical insurance companies won't or don't pay for birth control so women don't get pregnant in the first place but the TV is inundated with commercials for men's testosterone pills ! And that is covered by insurance! What a joke ! This country is going backwards !

If these clinics that are "forced to close" don't do abortions why not close four clinics that do abortions and leave these open so these women can still get care.

Hmmmmm....I don't think we'll let a loser like Chris Taylor determine whether we pro-life advocates should think this is a "win" or not. This is a sweet as a win can get! And there's more to come. However.....if you stop with the abortions through these clinics, then we can get back to real women's health issues and the funding of supporting them. When you don't play by the rules....expect to get wacked!

PP is just another form of public aid. Those who work for a living are paying for this plus paying for their own care.

As pro choice as I am, Planned Parenthood is a farce, they hide behind certain buzz words and then cry a river when funding gets cut by government despite appearing to operate as a private organization, in other words they try to have their cake and eat it too. Live by the sword (government money) you die by the sword. That lesson isn't learned easily these days I see. Don't care.

The left is stewing about the fact that P.P. can't do abortions and they're also whining about not being able to adopt Russian babies. Let's see,it's o.k. to kill American babies and we must adopt Russian babies. WOW.

"Planned Parenthood said the closures will affect services such as cancer screenings, breast exams, birth control, STD testing and treatment, and HIV screening provided to 2,000 patients." The choice of words here is clever and gives you a false impression. They only do abortions and hand out pills. The other services are ones they refer patients to but don't do.

Planned Parenthood doesn't actually do mammograms. It refers women to diagnostic centers.
