Former Janesville man sentenced in federal court for cocaine conspiracy
MADISON—A former Janesville man who pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to distribute cocaine has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Omar Velazquez, 21, a citizen of Mexico who had been living in Janesville, was sentenced Wednesday in federal court, according to a news release from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
According to the news release:
On Dec. 5, Velazquez pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiring to possess cocaine with intent to distribute and conspiring to distribute cocaine.
Velazquez in April delivered a kilogram of cocaine to a confidential informant, in Beloit. He arranged for the informant to buy two more kilograms of cocaine later in the month.
The court found Velazquez was responsible for 15 to 50 kilograms of cocaine while he was involved with the conspiracy, as well as guns found during a search of his home.
Other people charged in the conspiracy are Emeterio Velazquez, Rosalina Velazquez, Ruperto Ruiz, Nicholas Covarrubias, and Jose Castillo-Madrigal. Emeterio Velazquez is scheduled to enter a plea on March 1. Covarrubias has pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing. The other defendants are awaiting trial.
The charges against Velazquez were the result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Beloit Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Justice, Stateline Area Narcotics Team, Rockford Police Department, FBI Safe Streets Task Force, Rock County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Illinois State Police.
