Snowmobile death toll increases
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Fifteen people have died from snowmobile activities this winter in Wisconsin.
That’s five more than a year ago.
Department of Natural Resources officials said speed, alcohol and nighttime driving are among contributing factors. They also say increased snow may have contributed. They’re warning sledders to take extra care as spring nears and ice thins on lakes and rivers.

Sledder and Boston Bill...you guys are right on target. The rest of you need a shrink. Snowmobiling....like any other recreational activity, comes with some inherent risks. Bicycling, skiing, boating, heck even golf! The tragedies of life are that injuries and deaths occur everyday during the simplest of things. So....we stop living? Golfer has heart attack, swimmer drowns in riptide or gets bitten by shark, bicyclist gets hit by car, etc. I've been snowmobiling every year for 45 years. Great family fun. Did it with my father as a child, with my brothers during youth, with friends ever since, and raised my kids having fun on snowmobiles. Heck when it's really bad out....I even use my snowmobile as my ride to work. You guys are off your rockers!

Snowmobiling is a great activity. I ride whenever I can and take my kids whenever I can. Like any activity, you need to aware of the dangers. The group I ride with purposely ends the day prior to 10p. In addition, the rule is, stop at each intersection to check on the person behind you and ride at what makes you comfortable.
.
Yes, I worry about the drunks; no different than in my car. I have been riding for over 20 years and never had a issue. Close calls, yes, but due to sobriety, no major issues.
.
Like anything else, personal responsibility is the key.

WOW! Some of the comments here are filled with anger and some are just plain dumb. I can say that because the people who made the dumb ones will think I am talking about someone else. JMO

How about we ban everything, so we can all sit at home and not have anything to do. We can all post stupid comments about things we know nothing about.

What a snowmobile? You mean those over powered, under priced, screaming metal deathtraps? They should be outlawed! No one needs something that can do more than 100 mph! Just like no one needs a assault weapon! They're too dangerous and way too loud, and they tear up the land! Outlaw them now! Don't wait any longer, call your state representative and demand that they introduce legislation to make all snowmobiles that have more than 20hp illegal!

I'm with birdman. Snowmobiles kill. Anything faster than a 2-stage snow blower should be outlawed.

We need snow mobile control NOW!
. . .
Raise the registration fees 2,000 percent to put toward hospital care and first responder costs, to cover those Snow Crazies who drive up costs!
. . .
Jack up the taxes on snow mobile fuels. Tax those zany cold weather suits they wear.
. . .
Who really NEEDS snow mobiles anyway! They are deadly!

I always thought speed, alcohol and nighttime driving were among the things that make snowmobiling fun for so many.
I'm just sayin'...

at least 3 were from going through ice on lake Superior by Madeline island. 1 the other day was a young boy crossing the road. Everyone wants to point out alcohol, like that's is all that snowmobilers do. I don't think the average person that does not ride snowmobiles understands the amount of people that are North riding when there is good snow.

Speed and alcohol? You think? Just like the reasons for car accidents with a death.
