Report: Southeastern Container closing Beloit plant
BELOIT—Southeastern Container says it plans to close its Beloit plant by May.
The plastic bottle manufacturing plant employs about 50 people.
In a letter Thursday, employees were told production is being moved to facilities in either Bowling Green, Ohio, or Effingham, Ill., according to The Beloit Daily News.
Workers will be offered the opportunity to transfer to these locations, but only 10 positions will be available in Effingham and eight will be available in Bowling Green. Workers also would be eligible for severance pay if they did not seek a transfer.
The 244,000-square-foot plant opened in Beloit in 2007.

Why do you supporters of our failing guv think this company is looking at Ohio and Illinois? Two states that have unionized public employees and all those high taxes, higher wages, and older plants. Do you think they see the failure this guy is? Maybe where he and his rubber stamp legislature are taking the state?

“Doug Wehrkamp, president of SEC, sited over-capacity production as the reason for the closure.”
What ever happened to supply side economics where if only we had lower taxes we would invest in more capacity and production that will drive more jobs? It drives jobs alright – these jobs were driven out of Wisconsin to Bowling Green, Ohio or Effingham, Illinois.

Of course Walker isn't personally responsible for this company moving. Of course there are many factors that led to this decision by the company, and of course my heartfelt condolences to those who are going to be out of work as a result. But I see our "esteemed" Governor standing up at the rare announcement of a new business coming to the state or a business expanding (or announcing "plans" to expand in the next several years) and taking credit for "creating jobs in Wisconsin", but shirking all responsibility when they leave like this, blaming the Obama administration or some other outside factor. It is classic psychosis.
---
Bottom line is that in his over-reach to create a 'business friendly' climate in the state he as done the complete opposite. By sewing the seeds of extreme political discord he has invited a huge backlash in the future, and business owners can see it coming. They're getting out of Dodge City while the getting is good. The politics of division, as practiced by our Republican Overlords, never exists without an equal and opposite reaction in the future. The poor state of Wisconsin is going to have to suffer some more before things improve, I'm afraid.

“By enacting my plan, we will be able to get government out of the way of employers big and small who will then help Wisconsin create 250,000 jobs by 2015, and as we create those new jobs, we will be able to add 10,000 new businesses.”-from Governor Walker's failed campaign promise

"We’re turning things around. We’re heading in the right direction. We’re moving Wisconsin forward.
Still, there is much more work to be done in the coming year. Our top priority is helping the people of our state create more jobs. As you know, we have an ambitious goal: 250,000 jobs by 2015." "But in Wisconsin, we don't make excuses... We get results."-from our failure of a governor Scott Walker's State of the State address 2013

Look, billnewbie is pulling a wislady - a nonsensical comment about something completely unrelated to the topic. Perhaps Obama should have been golfing with Phil Mickelson. Next we can blame Obama for all the snow that's been piling up.

One must remember that when those on the Left have no clue as to why an organization closes a facility and moves, they take it as an opportunity to repeat their standard blame comments.

What if the demand for plastic bottles is declining and this company has too much capacity? Both true. What if sourcing raw materials is an important input cost and being closer to the source lowers cost? True and advantage locations south of here. What if making plastic bottles is electricity intensive and a competing plant is supplied by the TVA at federally subsidized rates? Both true. What if corporate hired a third party to evaluate which plant to close and did not communicate directly with the communities/states involved. That's an educated rumor. What if a generoous financial package was put on the table by Beloit & WI but that lower tax rates in competing states, both property and personal income, overwelm the value of one-time incentives? I think we will find out this is true. These decisions are far more complicated than one might expect from the outside looking in. And they rarely ever have anything to do with political posturing. Companies create and destroy jobs, not politicians.

All the best to these workers. I pray that people are paying attention to this economy and not buying into what the media is telling them or what the two twisted political parties want the people to believe. We can sit around and point fingers and blame someone else for these jobs going away and our situations all we like, but the solution doesn't lie in waiting for someone else to make things all better for us. In other words, "uncle sam" has reached his sell by date! We're headed for uncharted economic times in the not too distant future. We're not in the industrial aged economy anymore, yet, our "educational" system is teaching principles that apply to "what was" and not to "what is". It's wake up and do something, time for all of us.

HMMM...I don't think we have enough information to know WHY they chose to consolidate their operations elsewhere - did you ever think that the lease and utilities might cost too much for the Beloit facility compared to their other locations? Not seeing how you can blame Walker and Ryan if that is the case, but go ahead, pull a reason out of ... your hat.
