Wisconsin governor still hasn’t issued a pardon

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican Gov. Scott Walker hasn’t issued a pardon or set up the next version of the state’s Pardon Advisory Board, refusing to exercise one of his office’s most expansive powers to restore felons’ former rights.

Walker spokesman Cullen Werwie said Monday the governor has suspended the pardon program but offered no explanation beyond “because he has made the decision not to grant any pardons at this time.”

Werwie didn’t have any numbers on how many people have requested a pardon, saying only that the office has received “a bunch.”

Walker’s lack of action stands in stark contrast to his predecessor. Democrat Jim Doyle pardoned nearly 300 people during his eight years in office, with roughly a third coming during the last three-and-a-half months of his tenure. Tough-on-crime Republicans ripped Doyle then, saying he abused his pardon powers.

Someone as a teenager does something wrong, serves the sentence, becomes a fruitful member of society and applies for a job- oops- past criminal activity. After 15/ 20 years they decide to apply for a pardon so they can get a decent job or decent housing but NO our current ( so important) Governor won't even look at their history. Anone opposed to this comment is quite frankly a seriously cruel and mean person. Grow up and start thinking about actual people.

Carlitos......Now you're criticizing Walker because he hasn't attempted to pardon people like those you claim lied for him as a part of "Walkergate"? Be honest, if he would have pardoned those people similar to those, you would have been relentless with the attacks. You are such a joke!

Do the crime, do the time & live with the consequences. This nonsense of we all make mistakes - yeah whatever. Didn't work for me during the Carly Ottery trial doesn't work here. It's called think before you act. Actions have consequences.

If some of you that are so negative would look at some of the crimes and see that examples sometimes to prove a point, has destroyed many YOUNG lives. 17 is considered an adult, Some systems waive 14 and 15 year old kids into adult court and their lives for one mistake are forever ruined. It depends on who you are and where you come from. As to Walker he is and always will be ignorant as to the understanding of anything as he is incapable of comprehending anything relating to human people. You would think after all his friends and co-workers went into the system, that he would help them as they are doing for him by not telling the whole truth as to his part in the walkergate investigation.

So now this is the latest criticism, some people are desperate I guess when all the crying they have done for 2 years and predictions of destruction to the state didn't come true they have to find something else. Pardons, really? Who cares?

It seems that most folks don't understand what a pardon is in Wisconsin. A pardon does not get you out of prison, in fact, you can't even apply for a pardon until you've been out of prison for at least 5 years and are no longer on probation or parole. The only thing a pardon does in Wisconsin is restore certain rights lost when you were convicted, i.e. voting, owning a gun or holding public office.

What is wrong with a pardone. All you people think you are perfect. I believe if a person has done a crime that doesn't involve using a weapon or killing someone or who commits crimes over and over should be pardoned. Some people who are in the wrong place at the wrong time shouldn't be punished for the rest of their lives cause our governor can't get off his high horse.

If they are guilty and were convicted by the system then they should do the time.
All of it !

analertcitizen: So, you want more, "tougher" (gun) laws, then you want the governor to be forgiving and issue pardons??? Hello? Starting to feel like the AFLAC duck here on the Yogi Berra commercial because one set of ideals conteracts the other. (Referring to your posts from the Newtown blog). So all the illegal shipments of automatic weapons coming in are going to law abiding citizens, right? ("If they were not legal, Adam Lanza's mom would not have had them and Adam Lanza would not have gotten his hands on them.")

Justice? That's what the courts are for!

Our previous idiot-in-chief, weak-man Jim Doyle, handed out so many pardons before he finally walked off the stage that it'll be years before we need to see that happen again.

You can be tough on crime but you don't have to be an unforgiving lazy jerk to prove it.
