Gun shows face new scrutiny after school shooting

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Heightened sensitivities and raw nerves since the Newtown school shooting are softening displays at gun shows and even leading officials and sponsors to cancel the well-attended exhibitions altogether.
Organizers of a show next weekend in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., agreed to bar the display and sale of AR-15 military-style semiautomatic weapons and their large-clip magazines.

Public Safety Commissioner Chris Mathiesen says “the majority of people wanted these guns out of the city.”

The mayor of Barre, Vt., wants a ban on military-style assault weapons being sold at an annual gun show in February. The police chief in Waterbury, Conn., has halted permits for gun shows.

Sigma40, The gun show being held at The Red Barn in Evansville this weekend was shut down Saturday evening by the Rock County Sheriff. I've heard that a local resident complained about the noise and traffic and Sheriff Spoden found a loophole in their liquor license (class B, I think) which prohibits establishments from running any other kind of business on the premises. Due to the bar building being connected to the display hall building, they are in violation. If they had the more expensive class C liquor license, there would not be grounds for the sheriff to shut the show down. I was told the owner of the Red Barn thinks this will probably put him out of business.

I've been attending gun shows at The Red Barn for well over 3 decades. I don't know if this was started by a generic idiot - the type that builds a home in the rural farming country and then complains about the smell of chickens and pigs, the type that buys a home in a sub-division next to an airport and then complains about the jet noise, or if this was started by an anti-gun jerk, forcing the Sheriff to take action. I was at the show yesterday afternoon, and it was packed. People were parking on the road as the parking lot was full. It wasn't noisy and everyone arriving and leaving when I did was driving very cautiously due to the crowded parking.

I also heard that other gun shows conducted at similar establishments are going to be checked, but I have no confirmation of that. I haven't seen it reported in the news yet, but I did drive over there this morning and found a nearly empty hall with the last couple of dealers still packing up.

If the owner of The Red Barn hasn't thrown in the towel on doing business in Evansville, I'd like to know what he might think of a fund drive to get his liquor license and/or whatever other conditions need to be met to allow him to continue to have gun shows (and other types of shows) at his location. It's a conveniently short drive from Janesville and a nice location for smaller shows of any type, not just gun shows.

Other than what I observed at the show yesterday, this is all second-hand information. I was not present when the show was shut down. It will be interesting to read the news coverage of this incident.

This is what liberals want to stop, parents protecting their families...pathetic.

"LOGANVILLE, Ga. — A woman hiding in her attic with children shot an intruder multiple times before fleeing to safety Friday.

The incident happened at a home on Henderson Ridge Lane in Loganville around 1 p.m. The woman was working in an upstairs office when she spotted a strange man outside a window, according to Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman. He said she took her 9-year-old twins to a crawlspace before the man broke in using a crowbar.

But the man eventually found the family.

"The perpetrator opens that door. Of course, at that time he's staring at her, her two children and a .38 revolver," Chapman told Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh.

The woman then shot him five times, but he survived, Chapman said. He said the woman ran out of bullets but threatened to shoot the intruder if he moved."

Typical liberal reaction nvgrf, support aborting children but rage against an object used by criminals instead of focusing on the criminals. More faux left fringe outrage.

Mooshoo, after you manage to convince us that you really do own an AK-47, we might consider your suggestions for licensing guns like cars. Of course, you will have to let gun-owners have 5th, 6th, 11th and 12th convictions of wrongfully shooting someone, the way drunk drivers are getting repeatedly let off with little jail time, before we would consider voting for changes in the gun laws.

I was at the gun show at The Red Barn in Evansville today. The parking lot was full and dozens of cars were parking on the street. The display area was packed with people and numerous AR-15 style rifles and hi-capacity pistols were in sight. It was nice to see at least one sector of the American economy is Booming (pun intended).

The show is open again tomorrow from 9:00am to 3:00pm. http://gunandknifeshowfinder.com/events/...

LOL RAF refers to stronger gun control as a "knee jerk reaction" to the recent slaughter of children. Has this guy been asleep for the last umpteen years while calls for stronger gun control measures rang out across the nation? LOL

carlitosway, where in any of those links did you prove my comment and source were wrong? All three articles showed that gun sales are up, but none of them showed that new gun owners were increasing. One article made a comment about one new gun owner, but that was the only reference to it.

Carlitosway, the ar-15 functions no differently than any other semi auto hunting rifle, one bullet for every pull of the trigger. They don't like them because they look scary, cosmetics. And if I have to defend my life with a fire arm, I want more than 5 rounds!!!! You would to.

Gun owners need to keep there guns locked up when they are not using them. fine example in new town where the boy had access to these guns and killed the gun owner. now you will say what good is a gun if you have to unlock the case for a break in. I believe the gun owner will have plenty of time to retreive the gun from the case besides does the gun owner always carry his or her gun on them at all times. If so sick people would not have access to the guns

The gun show organizers were mistaken to bar AR-15 style firearms. If the sight of military design firearms bother you, don't go to a gun show! I hope the Waterbury, Connecticut, police chief winds up in court over halting the issue of gun show permits.

Back in 2008, the prospect of having Billary or Bama as president caused such a massive buy-out of existing gun and ammunition supplies by newbies that many regular shooters couldn't buy target or recreational shooting ammunition for months. The prospect of 4 more years of Obama socialism and GOP dithering are causing more former non-gun-owners to buy firearms and ammunition to get a sense of self-determination in their personal security. It's more apparent than ever that those controlling our nation's government have no self-control and no concern and/or clue that they are spending and legislating America to death. It's bad enough when some middle school drop-out spouts drivel about "free" Federal money. It's terrifying when your Congressional Representatives, Senators, and President (nearly all college graduates and lawyers) do so term after term.

"Gun shows face new scrutiny after school shooting"

Another fine "journalistic" piece by a fine "news" organization.

Let us speak of gun shows and the Newton school mass murder by a madman in the same sentence, to imply that gun shows and the mass murder were in any way related.

Let's conveniently ignore the fact that the firearms used by the mentally ill mass murderer were stolen from the legal owner after the mentally ill mass murderer murdered said rightful, legal owner.

You see, the leftists, liberals, and "news" media has an ongoing thing about gun shows, they can't stand to think that rightful legal owners of firearms are able to sell a firearm to another law abiding citizen in a totally legal manner.

The left has been after this so called "gun show loophole" for decades. They are so morally bankrupt that they will not hesitate to dance in the blood pools of innocent victims to advance their agendas. Nasty, nasty people, and they're ignorant too.

JozeMozes I agree on both the stats and morality comments. I shudder at the knee-jerk reaction to events instead of looking at the root cause. The idea that evil can be controlled in our country by a new law remains a laughable proposition.

Almost RAF, the UCR stats are misleading at times in how they are reported. Rifle could mean of the hunting variety in certain jurisdictions while Assault Weapons might be classified Other
guns or type not stated. Regardless the disease is in the human mind and not the implement. Pandora's box.
.
With that said the ONLY way we will ever come to any type of responsible legislation is through that scientific process. Why then are politicians once again doing the knee jerk mommy fix routine? I call for a consortium of well respected sociologists take a deeper look into how and why we kill one another and what the meek can do to protect themselves without the tools for the task at hand.

How can a supposed leader in a community make a remark as careless as that? "...the majority of people wanted these guns out of the city." Bollocks!
. . .
Unless he has results of a bonafide survey, using scientific method, the result of which show that most of the citizens do, in fact want "...these guns out of the city.", the man is just spewing hyperbole to pander to a certain demographic in his area.
. . .
For all any reader might know, Mathiesen might well be remarking about the people in his bridge club, using that "survey" to bolster his own bias.
. . .
For any position you and I might take, on any given topic, comments that lack substance such as this, ought not be published in any serious work of journalism. It's simply emotion, devoid of reason and fact.
