Report to recommend gas tax, other fee increases
OSHKOSH—A report to state lawmakers will recommend increasing the gas tax and raising vehicle registration and driver’s license fees.
The Oshkosh Northwestern reports Thursday that the report to be delivered next week will include those options and others as a way to close the state’s $2 billion transportation funding gap.
Gov. Scott Walker has said improving the state’s infrastructure is one of his priorities, but he is opposed to raising the gas tax.
The report from the Transportation Finance and Policy Commission will recommend a 5-cent increase in the gas tax and tying registration fees to miles traveled.
The recommendations would generate about $479 million a year to pay for road, bridge, airport and other transportation-related projects.

This seems like more political "double speak". Will increased fee and tax rates guarantee better service? Is more road development necessary or is proper maintenance wiser? Looking around Rock County and the use of roads and bridges which were recently built I question the wisdom of our state's development "plans". Considering the state of ordinary tax payers I think that these roads will only pave the way to a hasty exit from our state. Citizen, how much is in your wallet?

I agree with Jarod's comment. Verifying miles driven every year is going to be a nightmare. There are going to be a lot of cheaters/liars on their mileage reporting unless a DMV employee has to go outside and verify the odometer reading. I say just raise the gas tax to what is needed to pay the bills and let the people from out of state help maintain our roads too.

So, will this mileage tax be placed on commuters only, or will business who's vehicles use the roadway too share in the sacrifice as well? I suspect business will not have to pay the mileage tax. You wouldn't want to burden the "job creators". Keep in mind too that Scott Walker's Act 32 brought you this Transportation Finance and Policy Commission. Check out the make up of the 10 person board. Six lemmings are governor Walker appointed, 2 are Republican appointed, 2 are Democrat appointed. Lots of business people on the board to help decide what is fair for everyone.

You said it WisconsinResident! I work in Madison, my spouse works in Milwaukee. We have fuel efficient cars a travel tax would kill us. Bad enough the gas does. I would much rather have a sales tax increase.

I drive 100 miles a day just to work. Can't move closer to work because houses in Janesville aren't selling. My 5 year old car is worth practically nothing now that I've racked up 126,000 miles. No way could I afford to pay higher gas tax AND registration tax based on miles driven. My wages and benefits are shrinking thanks to Mr. Walker and the whacked out health care system. For example, had a modest co-pay for my prescriptions...but now the insurance company will only dispense two weeks worth of meds at a time.

Don't know about anyone else but I can't afford higher gas prices and higher registration fees. Can anyone else afford that I doubt it. So Mr Governor no new fees or gas taxes.

When I have to pay a higher state income tax some of that is deductible on my Federal tax's but "user fees" are just money out the window.
I see the representatives are playing the game of promising to lower tax's in a campaign and doing just that only to slip their hand into my wallet for a user fee. When will we voters stop fighting, name calling and cheerleading amongst ourselves and actually hold the elected officials accountable for the promises they make during a campaign and if they promise the sky and cannot deliver then they are voted out instead of voting for a person simply because they have a D or R next to their name...
Oh that's right we would have to pay attention and make our voting decisions based on something other than the hundreds millions of dollars of advertising spots telling us why the other guy should NOT be elected.

A report that recomends increasing the gas tax and the cost of regitering your car or truck. No no new taxes no increase ast the pump or what we pay for registration. The state needs to learn to stay with in their budget like the rest of us have to.

Gas tax = simple solution with no opportunity for corruption. I wonder why Walker's not on board with it...
Mileage monitoring is just another attempt by the Government to erode away the remaining personal liberties you enjoy (they'll find a reason to use GPS technology to implement this) - the Patriot Act and Homeland Security have already shredded most of our other rights to anonymity.

I say they charge registration based on the value of the vehicle like in Iowa. If you buy a $75,000 SUV, then you pay more in fees. Clearly you can afford it. Keeping track of miles on many thousands if not a million cars seems really silly and very costly to maintain and enforce.

I see a problem with verifying the miles you have driven with licensing fees. Will new state jobs be created to do this? Not that I want taxes raised, but if gas tax was raised, everyone who travels within the state and purchases fuel would help pay the fees - if you drive on the roads, you are helping to pay for their upkeep. And if you read the latest articles, tourism is up throughout the state so anyone from other states here either driving to their destination, or renting a car once they get to their destination will also be paying their fair share.
And I like Dwight's comment as well.

kinda hard to forget that our state Government is in complete Republican control and we have to change the dictionary to read "user fees" instead of tax increases. !!!

I dont begrudge anyone a job. Everyone would like a fair tax system. You may not like my version of a fair tax system but at least it is a starting point. Me being single am being way over taxed for the things I do not use or care to buy. If someone want to spend $50000 on a new vehicle as opposed to someone spending $20000 the tax on the higher was their choice to pay.

joker, doing it your way would mean people at poverty line would be paying more of their money toward sales tax and getting less for their few dollars, while the wealthy would love it because they wouldn't pay income taxes, and they just wouldn't buy stuff - they would just invest their money. They tried to get the wealthy to pay more with a luxury tax, and that failed, too - the wealthy quit buying and people lost jobs. You might not like that some wealthy guy could buy a yacht, but that meant jobs in boat building and maintenance, and a bunch of other stuff I couldn't even comprehend because I can't afford one. But I don't begrudge the guys building and maintaining stuff for rich people their jobs, do you?

Yes its called a user tax. As long as my income taxes get lowered I am OK with this. I travel 20 miles to get to work and 20 miles home, so this will affect me. However, it is the fairest way to tax JQPublic. If you use it you pay. Do away with income tax completely and go with a higher sales tax.

So let's see. Lower income taxes and raise all fees to make up the difference.
