Janesville schools issue weather alert
JANESVILLE – The Janesville School District sent a weather-related message to parents on Monday night, saying that “as of this evening,” school would be in session on Tuesday.
“Please be advised that the temperature tomorrow morning is predicted to be around minus 6 degrees with a wind chill of minus 23,” the message continues. “Parents who have children walking to school or waiting for a bus may want to make other arrangements.”
District spokesman Brett Berg said school would be in session Tuesday if there's no change in the forecast. Officials could still cancel school if conditions worsen.

slippry- lol.
janesvilllean- yep it is cold and windchill is cold but wearing shorts is stupid. This will not protect from frostbite. Again- all the warning you want but you cannot fix stupid. IF you bundle up and cover yourself - you will be just fine.

No mblack, The alert should be given to the parents of said kids,in the form of a slap to the head for letting their kids out with no damn clothes on! They don't need alert messages. Anybody with half a brain knows its cold out and should dress accordingly. Why should everybody be responsible for other people that are too stupid to put some warm clothes on themselves or their kids?
And yesssss 1slippery1, That there was funny I don't care who ya are.

It is always amazing to drive past the school in the morning when it is 6 degrees and some students are wearing SHORTS in middle school. Seriously? This is why the alert now messages are needed.

I've seen kids around this city shaped like honey boo boo, I would say the body mass compared to an adult is a wash.

The historical mean LOW temperature for January is 9 degrees, so this is below a "normal winter day" if you use actual science. Wind chill of minus 23 is well below normal.
.
Children have a much smaller body mass, all of which is closer to the surface than an adult's, so hypothermia can set in much faster than in an adult. Please be careful.

westorbust Thank you for alerting those that are blessed with ignorance. Many kids walk to school and have no other option and leave it to the ignorance of the school district to not have a clue as to how many do not have other options. 23 below chill factor is a serious risk to children and elderly.

"That is not even that cold."
No.
Just about 10-15 minutes outside without the right kind of clothing and hypothermia can set in, and as someone who's had it, you don't know until it's nearly too late, and children are especially susceptible, but then I guess ignorance is truly bliss with some people.

That is not even that cold. Why are we making alerts for a normal winter day? Seems the media over dramatizes and feeds peoples excuses get a free day off.
