Sen. Cullen unveils alternative mining bill
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Senate Democrat has introduced his own legislation to rework the state’s mining regulations.
Republicans have already unveiled a bill that would overhaul iron mining regulations to help Gogebic Taconite open a huge mine straddling the Ashland-Iron County line.
Sen. Tim Cullen, a Janesville Democrat, released his own bill on Tuesday. It would set a longer time frame for permit approval than the GOP bill. Unlike the Republican measure, Cullen’s bill would allow the public to challenge the decision-making process while it’s still in progress.
Cullen's bill appears to have little chance of passing. Republicans control both the Senate and Assembly. But Cullen said he hopes the Republicans will at least incorporate some of his ideas into their bill.

Most if not all the "mining" jobs will likely go to out of work miners from MI & MN.
Why spend time and money training people from WI when there is a ready, willing, and able workforce available?

There are probably people here in Janesville, who would move to Hurley if there were jobs.

Janesvillean wants to let us know about a country with unanimous legislature. He must be thinking of the U.S. 2008-10. Democrats held midnight meetings to ram through the stimulus. Democrats used the Cornhusker Kickback, Louisiana Purchase, Gator Aid, and the Senior Swindle to ram Obamacare through.

How about just some common sense? how about a psychological evaluation? I like a good conspiracy theory as much as the next loony, but no, wislady, I am certain that RockEnvironmentalNetwork would suggest, as any rational human being would, 3 headed frogs, brown, chemical filled drinking water (preferably flammable) and high rates of cancer in humans. Because, as we all know, corporate and consumer needs FAAAAAAAAAR outweigh LIFE. After all, that's why everyone wears a mask in China these days! ~Nothing to see here~

There is nothing stopping mining now except the companies have to follow OUR rules. They probably donated a bunch of cash to a campaign so it will get RAMMED through. No more EPA rules to worry about....yeeehaaa

I can introduce all you Republicans to a country that has a unanimous legislature. The decisions are made in advance, and the members vote without dissent. It's probably heavenly for the likes of you. Not like America, with its messy "democracy".

Oldvet was right on. Cullen was "incensed" the GOP bill didn’t include any ideas from Cullen’s committee.
Cullen promised to introduce his own bill...but his office says drafting has been delayed, pushing the introduction back.
Cullen’s bill has almost no chance of passing..

Only thing Cullen needs to introduce is the end of him milking his position.
I used to think he had credibility, but the last few years he has showed what he really is all about...
And that has nothing do with the betterment of our state...

The Open Pit Mining Bill explicitly states that groundwater contamination by a mining company is acceptable (LRB1129/1, Page 189).
The bill allows the DNR to exempt mining companies from environmental standards...allow mining companies to fill lake beds....allow mining companies to dump their waste onto sensitive shorelands and floodplains...double the standard area of groundwater surrounding a mine that could be legally polluted by a company....change the standard from protecting public health welfare from "will not" cause harm to "is not likely" to cause harm.
Once this planet is polluted....and there is no longer fresh water....and we allowed this so private companies can profit....where do you think we will live? Our grandchildren will look back on us and think "these decisions were unthinkable". This is absolutely crazy!(watch the trailer for the movie "Living Downstream")

oldvet, I don't know what the legislatures are like in the country where you practice animal medicine, but here in the United States each legislator may introduce their own version of a bill and the final selection is made in committee. I'm happy you are showing interest in learning how the political process works in this country. Perhaps where you come from, though, the legislature quietly waits for an industry lobbyist to write the laws and then they slavishly pass what has been written for them. Fortunately, we don't live in such a banana republic.

Good luck Sen Cullen. While mining may in fact be good for economic growth and essential to forward the human race. The Republicans are only listening to those that donate to thier relection accounts. Unlike you, that understands that every argument has two sides, they do not.
