WPS Health Insurance laying off 450

MADISON—WPS Health Insurance has notified the state it will begin laying off about 450 employees at the end of March.

The layoffs are mainly because the company lost two major federal contracts.

Two-hundred-50 people in Monona and Madison and 201 people in Wausau are affected. The Monona-based nonprofit health insurer anticipates additional layoffs if it doesn’t find new business to replace the federal contracts.

WPS CEO Mike Hamerlik to the State Journal last November that up to 600 employees could lose their jobs in 2013.

The company lost contracts to process Medicare claims as well as manage care claims for the military in 21 states.

The contracts made up about 40 percent of the company’s annual revenue last year.

The simple fact is that Gov. Walker will take credit for any reports of job creation in WI, he then better be able to take responsibility for job losses as well.

I think the Gazette allows comments on their stories because they find it entertaining to read all the uneducated responses articles like this one draw.

The Jobs again were lost over GREED and another company will help lower costs by charging less. To those that cannot see BIG CORPS bilking the government, then you need to do the math and for GOP people it doesn't always add up. Walker only puts people in places of government monies that will benefit him Also Walker continues to refuse Federal help and defies what really works with falsified figures to try and make him self look good, so that puts light on where and why the Jobs are going, OUT OF WISCONSIN! It amazes me how you that support Walker and the GOP, think others should take pay cuts, benefit cuts and the rest of the cuts he has put on the working class BUT you cannot see a COMPANY charging less to help the economy IMO you are all misinformed by those you stand with

and on top of all this, we're going to allow illegal aliens to stay in the country.. aint that grand? Not enough jobs for people who are here legally? Lets tell the illegal ones they can stay. Typical left wing government nonsense.

yep, the government doesn't create jobs, it kills them.. because after all, the money for any jobs the government DOES create has to come from the folks in the private sector who would create more jobs if so much of their money wasn't going to pay for government jobs... picture a big dumb dog chasing its tail and you get the picture.

Those federal contracts are not a right
that WPS is entitled to.
This is competition in the private market.
This capitalism at work.
This is outsourcing government jobs to private industry.
We are supposed to love this stuff.

stubs--Please list the specific "regressive policies of the Waker Administration make Wisconsin an unfriendly place to have contracted work". I would like to see your correlation as to how they impacted these contracts. Or are you saying that Obama and certain members of the federal government are "punishing" Wisconsin because their state government believes in different policy than the Federal government. In that case, wouldn't this cast the Federal government in a negative light as opposed to Walker and Wisconsin's state government?

most of the Medicare work that WPS handled (J6) now is being done by National Government Services out of Indianapolis.

the military contract was awarded to United Health Group out of Minneapolis. That contract was previously ran by TriWest Health Alliances out of Phoenix and WPS handled claims for them..so technically WPS didn't lose that contract, TriWest did.

Well- Scooter takes credit for every job created, so logically he must also be responsible for every job lost!

---

Actually this has nothing to do with Walker....unless the Federal Government pulled the contract because WPS is a Wisconsin-based company and the regressive policies of the Waker Administration make Wisconsin an unfriendly place to have contracted work.....so it may be that Walker actually does have some culpability.

Anyone know what company these federal contracts went too? Did someone in another state underbid WPS? Did they outsource them to India? Could easily be done if it does not require face-to-face interaction and guessing it does not if they are processing military claims from 21 states. Shame that Al Gore invented the Internet at times. Mixed blessing and curse.

Wisconsinresident.....it doesn't help Wisconsin at all....you would think that for all the money that the federal government blows through with the insane stimulus packages and bills loaded with pork, that it would find some way to lessen the burden on these companies that keep everything running......

How is this Walker's fault. You might want to start putting the blame on OBAMA. These are federal contracts not state contracts. You are such in a hurry to blame Walker on everything. Can you tell me one thing that Obama has done that has helped the USA. NOTHING, and it is going to get worse. Now he wants 11 million illegals to become legal. This should make you happy because they will get the jobs and all the free money that he gives out like candy.

Stubbs and ljs......so now you are saying that Walker alone has influence over the Federal government's Medicare program and how the US military processes it's medical claims?? Next question.....are you seriously that stupid?:)

So let me see if this is right. 50 people in Monona and Madison will lose their jobs and additional 201 people in Wausau will also lose their jobs for a total of 251 jobs lost. I addition up to 600 more people will lose their jobs in 2013 that sucks. You know the same story appeared on WKOW.com reported that 451 workers, including 250 in the Madison area Another 201 employees will be laid off from its office in Wausau For a total 451 jobs lost in Wisconsin. Now I know someone will say that jobs are out there. How ever how dose this help when it comes to the 250,000 jobs promised by Walker and the rest of the politicians. How many more jobs have to dose Wisconsin have to lose before it's enough.
