MADISON, Wis. (AP) — State revenue officials say sales of $30 scratch-off lottery tickets are doing well in other states, so why not add it in Wisconsin?

The Department of Revenue wants to add the ticket after the new fiscal year starts July 1. The department’s report to the Legislature’s budget committee doesn’t say what the payout on a $30 ticket would be, but notes that about 75 percent of sales would go to winners.

The state lottery had a record-setting year ending June 30 with sales of more than $547 million. The State Journal (http://bit.ly/ZP6Jix ) reports lottery sales are projected to decrease slightly in the next fiscal year to about $540 million.

hint - it's supposed to go to property tax relief; once the lottery administrative expenses are paid.

Sigma, just because you have a McDonalds job doesn't mean they are catering to you. You can buy as many scratch off tickets as you want. Just remember to use a coin and not a french fry to find out if you won.

As one ages, one sees what it used to be, what it is and one has a good idea of what it will be. In the early 60's we used to play football pools for a buck. The guy behind the counter had to be very sneaky about the card because there was jail time associated with gambling in Wisconsin. The pool made watching games more fun and there was the possibility of winning $ 100.00. There were some small card games going in Janesville in the back rooms of places like Barry's grocery and a couple of cigar stores. Again, fun and little money was exchanged. Today the state cannot think of enough ways to promote gambling because the state can make some pretty good money off of it. Just some memories of the past.

The lottery is basically a tax on people who are bad at math. Carry on and for God's sake don't tell them.

$30 scratch-offs? Looks like the poor are getting richer if they can afford $30 scratch-offs. Just think how much richer the poor would be if they hadn't spent $547 million on lottery tickets.

If we had a $10,000 scratch off,
maybe we could get Mitt to play!

Why not have a $100. scratch off? Why cater to the poor? If they are too stupid to manage their money why should the responsible people have to suffer?

My opinion here - the lottery tickets, liquor & cigarettes when mixed in with any kind of welfare, really makes it more difficult to justify continued support in welfare and charity programs. Without complaint, I give to and support welfare for the needy, but buying these products when you have a needy family is not what I want to support. The state needs to realize that more gambling preys most heavily on the poor rather than teaching them ways to get out of poverty.

And then the individual who complains about the price of gas but proceeds to pay $70 for a carton of cancer sticks. I was in Kwik Trip two days ago and a lady ahead of me bought two cartons of cigs and paid $136. $30 is nothing compared to that.....

I occasionaly buy a scratch off, and buy the $1 ticket most times. Its rare if I buy a $2 ticket. It would be a cold day in hell before I would spend $30 on a ticket.

That is a great idea!
I can't imagine who would spend $30 on a lottery ticket.
I can't shake the image of a man with a martini “shaken, not stirred”.

If Wisconsin wanted to make more money on gambling they would be smart to sell a fifty cent lottery ticket. Folks from Illinois would drive to Wisconsin the same as Janesville folks used to drive to South Beloit to play BINGO. Because the tickets would be half as much money the folks would buy twice as many and we could get all of those nice folks buying Wisconsin stuff and maybe even spending some of the winnings in Wisconsin. Lots of people will drive any distance to save a little.

At the same gas station folks grumble about paying $ 30.00 for a half tank of gas, but they enjoy throwing thirty bucks away on scratch cards. One born every minute.
