Paul Collar, a meteorologist at the Milwaukee/Sullivan office of the National Weather Service:
"This is more reality, what Wisconsinites have come to expect in March," Collar said. "We've had decent snows as late as May 10."

Neverforget. You don't get it. The teachers and staff don't make the decision to call off school. The principle and superintendent does. AND those people will work wether the teachers are off or not (Like the summer time.) Always blaming the teachers. Walk a mile in their shoes first. You wouldn't make it past the 50 yard mark.....

Schools will close but business's will stay open and people can get to those business's with no problem. Heck in pass snow days, you would find the kids at the Mall. How did they get there?

"They" are anyone employed by the school district. They get enough days off when they think they all work so hard. They just didn't take today off then because it might run into their summer vacation, because of the fact that they made a bad decision last week Wednesday. Let's not forget, when "they" all called in sick to go to Madison for recalling Walker, and school got cancelled because of their actions. I don't think the best interests of our kids was in their mind that day, either.

Ok, then YOU explain why the two days they decided to call off school were AFTER snowfalls, when sidewalks were clear and streets were already plowed? Common sense isn't that hard to use in this situation. Snowing badly, city is horrible with plowing DURING the snowfall, and we have hundreds of people going to school, along with thousands going to work around the same time, so lets add teens with little to no driving experience go to school and add to the danger rather than call off the day of the snow. No, makes more sense to call off the day AFTER the snow, right before a break of sorts....

Simple solution - don't send your kid to school if you are worried about the weather. Problem solved.

I highly doubt decisions affecting thousands of families are based on "they" wanting a day off - pray tell, who are "they"? Give me a break.

I'm all for them going to school. I have taken them EVERY day that there should have been no school, including today. I don't approve of them having to make up school days because the school district decided they wanted an extra day off. THAT is the disservice to the children.

I would agree that the SDJ has made some questionable calls; however, with that said, remember it is the parents' primary responsibility to protect their children. If school isn't called off and you don't think it is safe to send your child - don't send your child. Easy enough. As far as making up the days - parents who characterize going to school as a punishment do a disservice to their children.

neverforget, they used the first day up on the day before winter break, AFTER the roads were plowed and whatnot. The day they wasted last week is the one that will need to be made up on the built in day. Which my kids will not be doing. It's not the students fault that the school district wasted their days on the day AFTER a snow storm, therefore, I will not allow them to be punished for the inefficiency and neglect of others bad decisions....

I thought one snow day was built in to schedule. Which would of been last Wednesday. Only if they had more than one that they would make it up on the Friday before Memorial Day.

Yes her blood donation may save the life of one of her school mates / friends. With all this snow, and no plowing as of yet, there will be MANY accidents today!! I would have waited till after the storm and taken her to the hospital to donate blood.

Twerp: Good for your daughter. Donating blood is very rewarding. About 37% of the population is eligible to donate and less than 10% do annually. Her blood donation may help save a life!

Well in my day, they never closed the schools. We just strapped on a pair of cross country skis and forged through the snow...two miles...up hill...both ways.

nevergiveup: they already have to go the Fri of Memorial weekend to make up for last weeks day off. I hesitated about sending my daughter on the rural bus today, but decided to let her go. I may see about going to get her early if I need to, but she really wanted to be at school today for the blood drive. It will be her first time donating and she has been looking forward to it for the past 2 years. So I hope the Red Cross drive is still on there and the roads are not too terrible before school gets out.

Inewby, if the school district would get it right, they wouldn't be damned. They've used 2 snow days AFTER storms and during a time when there would be an extra long break. The first was right before winter break. The storm hit and everyone was calling it a blizzard, but school was in session. The day after, ya know, after the plows had been out and the sidewalks all nice and shoveled, there was no school. Wednesday was a prime example of how they screwed up. Ok, so maybe some rural areas were bad, but they could have used the "principal excuse" and let the majority of kids go to school. Now they are going to have to make up a day because of the school districts constant ill decision making skills.

well they couldn't close today, because then they would have to make it up on the Friday before Memorial Day. They are not about to ruin their 4 day weekend! They would rather have all the kids be traveling on the roads. As long as they get their 4 day weekend!

Why does a common weather occurence of an average proportion have such a great impact on what we do? Snowfalls like this have been happening long before we humans graced this earth. We manufacture the clothing, foorwear, vehicles and buildings to operate in these conditions so why is there such an ordeal? Insurance and liability issues? <--- that has influenced damn near everything we do and cost us so much it is amazing. Its sad that people cant even go to schools now.

Of course, JVL schools, lets close when the snow is over and the roads are fine. Let's stay open during a big snowstorm and driving is hazardous....
