Venezuela's Hugo Chavez dies at 58

CARACAS, Venezuela—President Hugo Chavez, the fiery populist who declared a socialist revolution in Venezuela, crusaded against U.S. influence and championed a leftist revival across Latin America, died Tuesday at age 58 after a nearly two-year bout with cancer.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro, surrounded by other government officials, announced the death in a national television broadcast. He said Chavez died at 4:25 p.m. local time.

During more than 14 years in office, Chavez routinely challenged the status quo at home and internationally. He polarized Venezuelans with his confrontational and domineering style, yet was also a masterful communicator and strategist who tapped into Venezuelan nationalism to win broad support, particularly among the poor.

Chavez repeatedly proved himself a political survivor. As an army paratroop commander, he led a failed coup in 1992, then was pardoned and elected president in 1998. He survived a coup against his own presidency in 2002 and won re-election two more times.

The burly president electrified crowds with his booming voice, often wearing the bright red of his United Socialist Party of Venezuela or the fatigues and red beret of his army days. Before his struggle with cancer, he appeared on television almost daily, talking for hours at a time and often breaking into song of philosophical discourse.

Chavez used his country’s vast oil wealth to launch social programs that include state-run food markets, new public housing, free health clinics and education programs. Poverty declined during Chavez’s presidency amid a historic boom in oil earnings, but critics said he failed to use the windfall of hundreds of billions of dollars to develop the country’s economy.

Inflation soared and the homicide rate rose to among the highest in the world.

Chavez underwent surgery in Cuba in June 2011 to remove what he said was a baseball-size tumor from his pelvic region, and the cancer returned repeatedly over the next 18 months despite more surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. He kept secret key details of his illness, including the type of cancer and the precise location of the tumors.

"Chavez positively changed his nation"
-
?

From the article, "Inflation soared and the homicide rate rose to among the highest in the world.".

His socialist party stole personal property and businesses. His socialist party removed radio, TV, and newspaper outlets that presented an opposing view. His [Chavez] family's personal wealth increased over 100 million each year he was in office; now valued over 2 billion. That is the change socialists in this country think is positive...lol.

poobah....Save your ink. Talking to the ignorant is futile. These people will never let the facts as to how Chavez positively changed his nation clear their judgements.

"Cases of malaria nearly doubled in Venezuela between 1998, the year before Chavez took office, and 2007. Incidents of dengue fever more than doubled over the same period. After the medical establishment blamed him for an outbreak of dengue fever last summer, Chavez halted weekly publication of an epidemiology report that for 50 years had tallied occurrences of infectious diseases nationwide."
Sounds like a great guy. If his socialist health care was so great, why did he go to Cuba for cancer treatment? Great guy...NOT!

He was a Patriot of his country. There was a good documentary on Netflix I watched with Oliver Stone on him. I always thought (because of our media) that he was a tyrant. After I watched the Doc I was blown away and started learning to question our Government. They love their smoke and mirrors show.

He was a U.S. foil and an international maverick and he will be missed: "In Venenzuela more than 2 million children could not go to school because they had no documents. Then came a government, that diabolical and demonic government, doing basic things, like saying "Children should be allowed in schools with or without documents." And the world fell: that is proof that Chavez is the epitomy of evil.” -Eduardo Galeano

jcommon said, "This war on poverty, war on drugs etc are all a big sham to let the government control you."

Clear to see who the uninformed one is. Those programs are all designed to enrich political leaders and their corporate cronies. If the programs also help anyone, it's considered the cost of doing business by those who are enriched. Your argument about control is the usual Republican line and it is totally unsurprising we would hear it from you. By the way, you missed one of the biggest scams in the world -- US military spending.

"Bare minimum to help the poor"
Really?
BTW, there are more people on food stamps then ever in the history of the US. How is that the bare minimum. This war on poverty, war on drugs etc are all a big sham to let the government control you. Do you really want to live off the government? Then maybe the US is not for you. Quit trying to change the US and instead live by what the founding fathers wanted. Praising Hugo Chavez wow. Do you praise Castro also?

jcimmon said, "Just goes to show you how uninformed people actually are."

Have you traveled to Venezuela, jcommon? If not, how have you better informed yourself than a person who has visited?

RetiredAirForce keeps reiterating the same incorrect argument that Chavez is not Christ-like because of reports of him enriching himself while in office. Apparently, RetiredAirForce and yourself fail to see that American leaders and their corporate cronies have enriched themselves with billions of dollars from the taxpayers -- right under your noses and while doing the bare minimum to help the poor. Not to mention those American politicians now proposing to do even less by reducing programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and food stamps. Chavez's Christ-like actions to help the poor could only possibly be denied by those who are ignorant of his administration's accomplishments to reduce poverty.

shopierehuh...You hit the nail on the head. These right wingers fear and hate anyone who would attempt to work to uplift those who struggle in society. And the odd thing is that most of them sit in church on Sunday and pray to the man who worked the hardest at it....Jesus Christ. They just don't get it.

poo you are the one that stated "more Christ like". If you now want to change your always inconsistent position(s), feel free. After all it was you that declared a person acting like Chavez, acquiring billions while his countries economy tumbled, was more Christ like than American presidents.

RetiredAirForce, after seeing you spell leftist as "leftest" for three or more years, I finally have to tell you that is not the "rightest" way.

And to assist your comprehension of my prior comment, I did not define what Christ-like meant. Christ would have done that for you. Seems amazing that it takes s pragmatic agnostic to tell YOU that. Although, I have to say, your interpretation of Christ-like sounds very much like several former American presidents and at least one very recently retired vice president.

from MistakenNBC, And I think he'll be remembered for having tried to make a life of poor people in Venezuela better but in the end of the day, having made it worse. When the consequences of his economic policies become apparent, it will end up that he spent an enormous amount of money to make people a little better off for a short period of time."

Yes, he was bad. We can't have leaders who use the country's wealth to eliminate poverty, provide food and free health care and education to it's citizens. Because we all know that the wealth should be held by a group of elites that comprise about 1 percent of the population. (sarcasm for those who need reminder)

Rest in peace, Mr. Chavez.
