New TSA policy could mean fewer Wis. freebies

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Now that federal officials plan to let passengers carry pocketknives on planes, that could mean fewer freebies for Wisconsin agencies.

In the past, some confiscated items were offered to Wisconsin agencies and charitable groups through the state’s surplus system. For example, pocketknives might have gone to scout troops while scissors went to health agencies.

But fewer items are likely to be confiscated starting next month. That’s when blades less than 2.36 inches long will be allowed on planes.

Bill Wilson supervises the federal surplus sales program that brought in confiscations from airports in Wisconsin and upper Michigan. He says thousands of knives and other items got auctioned off to benefit the Wisconsin Technical College System Foundation.

A Wisconsin State Journal report says those auctions raised about $18,000.

Not a single TSA person takes anything away from people.People are just to lazy to take it to check bags.People give up their items because of the hassle. If people Didnt take gasoline or fireworks,Loaded hand guns and many other stupid items maybe we wouldn't need them anymore.Oh and by the way it is funny how fast we forget about 9/11.The people that work for TSA are people who are doing the best job they can.Yes some of them are not perfect but how many people in the world are.Give them a brake. They are just people trying to do the best job they can and feed their family's.PS I feel a lot safer having them then nothing at all.30+ loaded hand guns are stopped at airports around the US each week. How do you no that one of them were not going to shot up the plane.Just a thought.

TSA is a joke anyhow and should be disbanded along with Dept of Homeland Security. Thank you George Bush.

I guess I fail to see how these are "freebies." They are confiscated items taken from their lawful owners, auctioned off, and the proceeds given to somebody else. This racket ending is a good thing. To take another persons property by force and then give it to somebody else is immoral.

Let's see, knives on planes... Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. *sigh*
