Some Wisconsin judges unhappy with child-porn law
FOND DU LAC—Some Wisconsin court officials are pushing back against a law intended to toughen punishment for those convicted of viewing child pornography.
The 2012 law calls for a mandatory prison sentence of at least three years. But some judges and prosecutors don’t like that inflexibility, according to a Reporter of Fond du Lac report.
Judges need to make the best decision based on the facts, rather than be locked into a minimum sentence by politicians who want to be tough on crime, Fond du Lac County Judge Peter Grimm said.
And facts vary in every case, Fond du Lac County prosecutor Eric Toney said. Officials need to be able to adjust accordingly.
But Republican state Rep. Mark Honadel said he sponsored the mandatory penalty because judges were being too lenient.
