GOP superintendent’s campaign blacklists news reporters

A Republican running to be Wisconsin’s schools superintendent has blacklisted five reporters he considers biased.

An internal memo from state Rep. Don Pridemore’s campaign says he will not call the five back or give phone interviews to them or their media outlets.

It names Mary Spicuzza of the Wisconsin State Journal, David Umhoefer and Patrick Marley of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jack Craver of The Capital Times and Scott Bauer of The Associated Press. Craver provided a copy of the memo to the AP on Sunday.

Neither Pridemore nor his spokeswoman, Tina Gorzalski, immediately returned phone calls from the AP seeking comment Sunday.

The memo was dated Dec. 21. Recently, Pridemore did not respond to multiple calls from the AP seeking an interview for a story previewing his race.

The Hartford Republican is challenging incumbent Superintendent Tony Evers, who’s led the state Department of Public Instruction for four years. The job is officially a nonpartisan post.

“If the reporter requests an interview, they must submit their questions in a written form and they will receive a written response to only those questions we want to respond to,” the memo said. “These are all LIBERAL’s and have chosen to parse words, phrases and spin my responses to fit their agendas. If they continue to spin our written responses, they will be ignored in the future.”

The memo also said any dealings with the five and others should be tracked on a spreadsheet. It does not say what reporting, if any, landed them on the blacklist.

Wislady comes through again. Predictable as ever. This is almost too easy.

Blacklisting is an old, old teabag tactic. Who wants to vote for that?

*snicker* Now Pridemore says it's all a misunderstanding, no blacklisting. And a former staff member says nope, that's exactly what we were told.

Obama is fair game, when it involves shutting out the press, he is an expert.

Based on a recent candidate forum that included Mr. Pridemore and Mr. Evers, it is probably in Mr. Pridemore's best interest to not comment publicly to ANYONE, including the five reporters. If he does not blacklist EVERYONE, then eventually someone is going to ask him a question about Wisconsin's public education system and Mr. Pridemore's answer will reflect his lack of knowledge of the topic.

When asked to state his experience and list his qualifications for the job of State Superintendent, Mr. Pridemore came up with two items - he coached a youth baseball team that did not cut the bad players and he was involved with the boy scouts. Umm, really? That doesn't qualify you to run a school, let alone the state's educational system.

On the bright side, Mr. Pridemore clearly believes in "local control," but is it too much to expect state legislator to know that many of the mandates he opposes were passed into law by the legislature that he is a member of?

When the press release announcing his candidacy included multiple grammatical and typographical errors it may have been a sign that this guy is in over his head.

His only chance is to decline all interviews and stop saying things in public.

I would expect nothing less from a republican. I'm sure donnaw and wislady approve.

Feel free to make your Obama "comparison" comments now, even though he has nothing to do with this story.

Constant negativity without facts. Would be nice to actually see the memo as other outlets are reporting it was written by a staffer who has since resigned and not Pridemore himself who merely wanted to deal directly w/the reporters himself.

"If this man actually spells makes his plurals with an apostrophe, then he certainly shouldn't be superintendent of anything, let alone anything to do with education"

Reminds me of someone on the national stage who refers to "corpsmen" and "a apocalypse".

GOP masterminds (and I use that term VERY loosely) like Rove and Jindal have claimed they want to rid the GOP of "stupid" candidates. I guess they overlooked Pridemore. Obviously, when your platform on public education are as flawed and anemic as Pridemores's it's best to eliminate any challenges to your position.

Shame on the "reporters" who are unable to put aside their liberal ideology and present some actual news. Every one of the people mentioned, has spent the last 3 years campaigning for the democrats and doing smear pieces on republicans/Walker.

The "blacklist" started on Dec 21, and the "reporters" just decided to use it as a story now?

Let's all consider, too, the track record of the AP, the source of this very story. Like any other publication, the AP has its own agenda. It, too, carefully selects it word choices for their impact.
. . .
Case in point, might each of us had a different mindset about this article if the the anonymous AP writer had not used the word “blacklist”? That’s a VERY [italics, please] powerful, emotion-inducing word, isn’t it‽
. . .
Or even the choice of all the words: “Superindendant candidate selective regarding reporters”. ‘Means the same thing to me, but then, the AP likely did not want a relatively neutral response to the candidate’s stance.

It's tough to answer questions when you don't know the answers no matter who asks them. If you can't handle reporters how can you handle a job where part of your duties is to answer questions. Pridemore has proved he is unfit for the job by his own actions before any votes have been cast.

Valid points by "abluedevil". Good to see some substance within a poster's remark. Sad that several of us continue to resort to over-used, unexpressive name calling.
. . .
Each of our nation's presidents do this very thing, in public, as they point and choose this reporter or that one during their time at the podium. Don't suppose it has to do with being "selective" as Pridemore openly acknowledges.

Good for Pridemore. Will the left wing biased media get the message? I doubt. They aren't very bright.

Just think, if we had unbiased journalism, this situation would never have come up. The fact this is not the first time this situation has happened, nor will it be the last, was completely ignored by most to include the writer and editor of this story....hmmmm.

why should he bother talking to those reporters, given the lying, liberal nature of the papers they work for? The cap times brags about being a progressive paper right on the front page. The others are a common joke. Maybe Mr. Pridemore realizes his time would be better spent talking to the parents and taxpayers of this state.

This foolish move thoroughly makes Pridemore unqualified for any public office, especially one as important as Superintendent of Public Instruction.
