JANESVILLE – The Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport is among the airport towers that the Federal Aviation Administration will close, according to a list released Friday.

The FAA announced it would close 149 federal contract towers over the four weeks beginning April 7, as part of the agency’s sequestration plan.

Towers in La Crosse, Kenosha, Waukesha, Oshkosh, Eau Claire and Waukegan, Ill., also are on the list, which can be viewed here.

Officials in the past have indicated the airport on Janesville’s south side would remain open, but traffic would be slowed.

most hobby pilots take off and land at uncontrolled airports than any other type. I just flew to one a few weeks ago to go have a hamburger with my accountant. It's what they do for fun. If you're a pilot, you know what to do. when you get close, you tune to a certain frequency and radio your position and intentions. It's a rather simple, yet effective system.

Rock County is mostly a hobby pilot airfield. If it was used extensively for business, they'd have paying members for gate and hanger use and a tower. But it isn't, nor has it ever been.

Maybe the companies that use the airport should be paying for the resources to operate the tower, not the tax payers. It is, after all, a government handout. Hmm....

I wonder what our conservative City Council member Mr. Kealy is thinking about how this will affect his restaurant out there at the airport?

I wonder what the out come would have been if it was a busy airport more on the lines of a rockford or appleton or green bay type airport. Something other than what a few bigwigs use to save a 30minute drive and others use to fly in and eat.

Politics aside, it's not going to help the local situation.

zdog: The DISTRICTs and I do believe I said Districts not cities, towns etc. Our District is represented by a Republican. Wonder what would have been the outcome if had been represented by a Democrat? Just curious.

How many flights a day come in and out of Janesville? Who uses the airport? How much does it cost us a year to oporate? I am guessing that the wealthy who can afford to own and maintain planes, and some of the bigger corporations in town are the users of the airport. I was told a while back, when they were doing the big expansions, that it was to land large planes for GM parts. I am not sure if that was truth or conjecture. Anyway, maybe it is time to scale back or eliminate the airport if it is only being used by a very small percentage of the population.

And this was the ONLY area the FAA could cut their budget? Sounds more like a political stunt with peoples safety involved

Way to go Congressman Ryan. Millions of dollars to improve the airport, but no tower. Millions of dollars to build your Road to Nowhere to encourage GM to stay. SHINE will be next to cancel. Ryan....Wrong for Janesville, wrong for Rock County, wrong for the 1st Congressional District, wrong for Wisconsin.

Who did YOU vote for? The Gazette endorses Republicans by a wide majority. This is what you all want if you want the sequester (austerity) budget. Remember that the austerity budget is the starting basis for Ryan's budget with even much larger austerity measures to kick in. This is the budget the Republicans unanimously voted for. The Gazette strongly endorsed Ryan so I wonder if they will step up to the plate and take responsibility for helping to kill the economy in Janesville through their endorsements...my prediction is a pretty strong "NO - NOT ME".

or maybe it's the more rural and less used airports that are being closed and rural areas tend to also be more "republican" Rock county isn't really a republican hot bed and it's on the closure list. Kind of blows that theory out of the water. Amazing what a little critical thought can come up with.

It was noted that 75% of the Airport Tower Closures were in Republican districts. This couldn't have been a political decision by the FAA and Mr. LaHood was it?

One less war based on a lie would pay for a lot more than all the towers, wislady.

One less trip by the WH occupants would pay for all of the towers.
