Cheap fun at the Beloit Snappers game

By GREG PECK ( Contact )   Wednesday, August 5, 2009 - 10:45 a.m.

Is your wallet a bit thin these days for a trip to Milwaukee's Miller Park? For inexpensive fun and a chance to see budding baseball professionals up close, you can't beat a trip to Beloit's Pohlman Field.

It's been cool most nights this summer, but it was a perfect night for shorts and T-shirts on Tuesday. The Beloit Snappers were playing the Peoria Chiefs, but my friends and I barely noticed--we were busy taking advantage of the Tuesday night home game specials--$1 hot dogs, sodas, popcorn and Leine's drafts.

You pay only between $6 and $8 to get into Snappers games. Nearby parking is free. And when you can have supper and a couple of beers for a mere $5, you can't go wrong.

We were eating and catching up on life as scoreless innings rolled by. Both teams showed spectacular defense. Peoria broke a 0-0 tie in the seventh inning with a three-run homer. Beloit answered in the bottom of the inning when Aaron Hicks socked a grand slam over the right field fence. Unfortunately, a miscue by Beloit's second baseman in the eighth helped Peoria again knot the score.

It was after 10 p.m., and the teams had played 10 innings when we agreed to hit the road. We were disappointed to not see the conclusion, but we enjoyed ourselves nonetheless. Good thing we didn't stay until the end because one of us had to work today--and today's Gazette reports that Peoria prevailed, 7-4, and the game lasted 14 innings.

I used to take in Snappers games several times a season. But this was the first time in two years that I've been to Pohlman Field. I don't feel the need as much now that Beloit is part of the Minnesota Twins organization rather than the Milwaukee Brewers'. I appreciated the chance to see future Milwaukee stars such as Prince Fielder in Beloit.

Still, a trip to Beloit is a great value if you enjoy baseball. The last "Dollar Night" Tuesday home game is next week. Why not check it out?

Many other promotions are scheduled before the season concludes in early September. For information, call 1-800-SNAP-2-IT or click on Snappers

I have watched the snappers or brewers as they were called since they came to Beloit in 1982!the names of those who made it to the majors are unbelievable like Billy joe Robiduexue(sorry about the misspelling) Chis Bosio, Juan Nieves, Terry Beveington, and so on the lis of people that have played @ pohlman in the last 27 years is remarkable.

I have been watching single "A" minor league baseball in Beloit for the last 20 years. I support the team regardless of their affiliation and am excited every time I see a decent crowd. I really wish there was more local support for the team and would love to see them get a new stadium.

I was recently in Ft. Wayne, IN to watch the Snappers win 2 of 3 games against the first place Tin Caps. Both games that I attended were sold out (approximately 7900 tickets sold!). As stated in the article, it is a great value to have the opportunity to watch up and coming ball players in our community! I remember watching Prince Fielder, Bill Hall, Rickie Weeks, Jeff Cirillo, etc play in Beloit, and that is only recently! Now that they are affiliated with the Twins, I have even had the opportunity to meet Paul Molitor, as well as several other big league names.

If you have the chance, please come out and support our Beloit Snappers!

Thank you for promoting Beloit. It's nice to see these kind of things in the Gazette.
