Is Janesville big enough for a hip-hop bar?
Gazette reporter Frank Schultz provided a two-day report Sunday and Monday on downtown bars, particularly Quotes and Corvina's.
Quotes had many problems with police when it first opened. But it has beefed up security and instituted a dress code that some people believes goes too far.
Corvina's plays hip-hop and rhythm & blues music that attracts a racially diverse customer base. Concerns expressed by neighboring businesses and residents have drawn the attention of police. Corvina's owner, Janelle Barlass, believes her bar is being singled out because of its racial diversity. Barlass has twice appeared before the city's alcohol licensing committee.
The controversy is the subject of Thursday's Gazette editorial. Unless you're a subscriber and thus get our e-edition, you can't read our editorials on our Web site. So be sure to pick up a copy of Thursday's Gazette to read our viewpoint on this debate.

Well heck, I got me a subscription! Thanx greg, your insight to important social issues in our community is comendable.
This, much like the demise of Disco, will eventually give way to common sensed-individuals that mature more and develope a ethical and moral standard to live life by that does not admonish those around them.
It is good to be informed of the areas that we, those whom go out on the town once in a bluemoon need to know. I always ask my son, wheres the trouble at and lets NOT go there. LOL.
The Old School Barkeeps along with Kenny (He had his troubles too); yet they handled it with proper security, Patronage Support. They are not tough if they resort to a gun, knife or clubs. Yah wanna be loud-mouthed and unreasonable? You desire trouble by your anti-social behavior in public? You go-out on the town looking for trouble? I think you know where this is headed.
In our day, we went out on the town to share enjoiment. To date and get to know people. To participate and laugh and have fun in a positive sense.
Not binge-drink. Not pay-for-services rendered by Ladies of THAT evening. Not look for a weaker minded innocent soul to prod-into a fight. By the way? Whats this new thing now days, blind side a guy with a smack for kicks & giggles? Come on now, whats with the mentality of those patroner's? Dump the Hip Hop and allow calm, cool, collectively positive establishments.
Special note to Janelle, In our day, when an establiment was fetching negative patronage, or a social atmosphere of the likes of your place? They would locate it on the outer boundaries of the city. Thus avoiding a majority of riff-raff and common hoodlums. Plus they had way less police calls because WE TOOK CARE OF IT out back...

I don't see anything good comming from this bar continuing to be in business. That music and culture is horrible. Not a blind opinion either, like people always assume. I am not a racist either, as I also believe that this particular style of music, and the atmosphere/ culture surrounding it, is causing more trouble than good for the black plight in America today.
*
All of this argument and subject material surrounding Corvinas, is unworthy. Get rid of it, or get used to hearing the news stories and recorded incidents which will occur there. Just watch and see, it will continue to have trouble.
*
Don't people realize, that this is more than just a particular beat and rythym? There is a common base of attitude, morals, behavior, etc which follows this style of entertainment and culture, which is often hate filled, degrading to women, violent, and lacking any old fashioned morals. Oh by the way, sometimes very racist and anarchy filled--itself. NOW----MIX THAT WITH ALCOHOL, DRUGS, and a large crowd of really nice church going, peaceful people, and none of them have ever been in jail. Sarcasm on that last part, if you didn't realize it.

The story spells the bar owners name two different ways, but I prefer the first spelling for its irony.

Greg, I guess what we're seeing here is folks are tired of the subject. 90% of the people you're addressing here wouldn't likely go to a hip-hop bar unless they were giving something away (after all, how many of these Gazette basher bloggers actually subscribe). You just have a case of Corvinas being in the spotlight because of some angry riff-raff, and the bar owner playing the race card when she's held accountable. There's not enough plot there for a Lifetime movie.

To be upfront, I don't think much good comes from most of Janesville crappy bars. Most of them are about the size of a two car garage, run down, and create more problems than anything. Why people pay three bucks for a beer in a rat hole is beyond me. That said, from my experience and from what I've heard, most of the trouble comes from Illinois more specifically Chicago and Rockford. The locals mostly all know each other and tend to keep things in check. So the question is how do you curtail the out of town trouble makers?

What a teaser. I'm pretty sure that not many care about the opinion of the Gazette on downtown bars. Couldn't you tempt us into buying your paper by offering real information? Helpful information?
This is not a racial issue. This is an issue of good security and crowd control in establishments that serve alcohol. Gazette - you're showing your attitude. Please pretend to be a real paper and report facts.

All of these stories on this bar are nothing more than the Janesville Fish Wrapper having nothing better to write about. The powers that be at the Janesville Fish Wrapper don't want this bar downtown just like they didn't want Jim Halbach downtown or anywhere else for that matter. They don't like it so they rip it to shredds in the Fish Wrapper until they get their way and the city closes it down. Man I miss The Bear Trap, Sporty's and any bar Kenny Weir ran.

In this society people who have problems with their behavior are sanctioned. If a group of people do not want to be sanctioned I would suggest that they behave themselves. If not, suffer the consequences. This is not a race issue. People have a knee-jerk reaction and claim the "Poor Us Syndrome". Bull, respect one another.

I have no issues or qualms about a hip-hop bar being operated in Janesville...given that the owners/operators of such business do everything within their power to prevent illegal activities from taking place within and immediately surrounding the establishment.
If this means instilling a dress code or promoting the business in such a way as to attract and maintain decent clientele, then that is what should be done. If these sorts of restrictions on the behavior of patrons are not enforced, then, in my opinion, the owner/operator is not interested in having a diverse, productive business...he/she/they merely want to turn a profit.
Profit is one thing, but being a good community partner is another. Certain types of music have always been synonymous with certain types of behavior and people, but it doesn't have to be that way. Properly run, they may find an increase in truly diverse patrons who would help promote the business, rather than give it and the music a black eye.
