Should county keep juvenile detention center open?

By GREG PECK ( Contact )   Friday, August 28, 2009 - 9:07 a.m.

Should Rock County close its juvenile detention center as a way to save money and help balance next year's budget? Rising costs and falling revenues, including much less state aid, have created a real mess as the county sorts out next year's budget.

One proposal would be to close the juvenile detention center or shutter one half of it. The idea has sparked spirited debate and even accusations that juvenile probation officers were told not to lock up high-risk juvenile offenders to reduce the numbers at the center and help make the case for closing it.

What do you think?

This is the topic of the Gazette's editorial Sunday.

Until Rock County gets a new head of Human Services that is more concerned with helping people than the bottom line, they might as well close it.

Closing the facility would be a mistake.

hannah: I don't write news stories, except for something like a feature on my recent vacation in Utah. I write editorials--the newspaper's opinion. I try to preview each upcoming Gazette editorial on this blog.

Newspapers try to keep news and editorial staff functions separate. That helps news reporters maintain objectivity so they can write fair and balanced stories and don't have to answer to their sources for what the newspaper might support or criticize in an editorial on a given topic.

I hope this helps readers better understand the differences between news articles (we've had several on the juvenile detention center) and editorials (the lone one so far is coming Sunday).

I don't think they have done an "editorial" on it. It was just a storyline, I believe.

no - these are NOT the only 2 options - several have been suggested on other blogs but "they" wont listen - people HAVE to start thinking outside the box to get thru this "recession" we're in. If they do, in the end it will be even better than before this hit.
