Book "Rads" misdirects Rock County
Earlier this year, I read “Rads,” the fascinating, disturbing account of the Sterling Hall bombing on the UW-Madison campus during the era of Vietnam War protests. I referred to the book when writing today's Gazette editorial about why reporters need a shield law in Wisconsin.
I was just 13 when the bombing occurred, and even though I grew up in Marshall, 20 miles outside of the Mad City, I didn’t recall the enormity of the blast—how it ravaged not just Sterling Hall and killed a top physicist but also damaged 26 other campus buildings, blew out windows for blocks and could be heard 30 miles away.
Anyway, I got to page 395, where kingpin Karl Armstrong is being extradited from Canada, and it says that to avoid protests or even a riot by Armstrong supporters, they snuck him in using the Rock County Airport, “50 miles WEST of Madison.”
Hmm, I’m no cartographer, but last I checked we’re more like 50 miles south/southeast of Madison.

Hmmm. It's here in my copy, too. I guess I'll have to burn it...just kidding I love this book. I'll forgive this one geographical misrepresentation. Just this one though.
