Eagles and falcons and bears, oh my!
As I pointed out earlier this week, my wife, Cheryl, and I ventured over to Muscoda last weekend. We own a nice lot on the Wisconsin River across and a bit downstream from that village. We mowed lawn but also took time to canoe and visit friends.
Our next door neighbor told about seeing a peregrine falcon right on his lawn. The large, muscular predator was hopping around the foliage at the base of a large tree, apparently hoping to snare a small creature for a meal.
Cheryl and I paddled over near a large eagle's nest across the river from our lot. We hoped to spot activity in the nest, which eagles have used for years, but couldn't detect any movement.
Neither did we see a bear.
A bear, you might say? Yes, another neighbor said someone claims he twice spotted a black bear across the river, which would put it south of the river and on the north edge of Grant County. We've all read stories about bears, wolves and cougars (remember Janesville's?) migrating farther and farther south, but I wonder if anyone has spotted a bear prevously in Grant County or that far south in Wisconsin.
