Vikings can have the Brett Favre Watch

By GREG PECK ( Contact )   Tuesday, July 28, 2009 - 12:46 p.m.

As reported in today's Gazette, Brett Favre is now making money--a humorous commercial--off his fabled indecision. I don't find it funny.

I loved watching Favre throw touchdowns for the green and gold, even though I hated his penchant for throwing interceptions at inopportune times.

Yet the annual ritual of waiting out Favre's off-again on-again retirement dabblings got downright annoying. I'm laughing that the Vikings and their fans are now saddled with this situation. But I won't be laughing if a healthy Favre winds up playing for Minnesota.

Why? Because the Vikings have a strong defense and arguably the best runner in the league in Adrian Peterson. The key missing link to a run deep into the playoffs? A serviceable quarterback. If Favre comes back healthy, the Vikings could be eyeing a Super Bowl berth.

That's not to say I don't appreciate Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers and his talents. I believe he likewise could lead the Vikings to the Super Bowl.

With that sterling defense and the chance to hand the ball off to a bruising Peterson, Favre might not have to be great. If he's healthy, he's still one of the best in the league. He proved that in the first half of last season with the Jets. Remember, it was an arm injury that left him and the team on a downward spiral late in the season.

Green Bay fans made Favre a hero, and he jerked us around with his annual indecision until Packer management understandably grew impatient. Now, it appears that landing in Minnesota, where he could get back at the Packer brass, was Favre's plan all along. It was the one place (other than, perhaps, Chicago) that Green Bay's honchos didn't want him to go.

I won't be cheering for Favre if he winds up donning a purple uniform in Lambeau Field.

What about you?

Wonder what they will write when he comes back out of "retirement" and decides to play with the Vikings? HAHAHA

Wow; quite the brutally honest assessment in a commentary in today's Gazette by Jim Souhan of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

A sample: "The Vikings should be ashamed of themselves for investing hope and faith in the most self-absorbed great quarterback in NFL history."

And: "Only the Packers, and their fans, are winners today. They recognized Favre for the unrepentant flip-flopper he is, and pushed him out the door rather than spend every off-season fighting through Favre Fatigue."

Ouch. Pick up today's Gazette and read the whole piece.

Yeah, moot point now. Sure glad I did not pull the trigger to fast on Minnesota to win the division and conference, because I knew there was still a decent chance he would not go there. Everytime it looks like Favre will do the "logical" thing, it will be counter of whatever the logical thing is. Seemed pretty logical to go to a team with a star running back, and solid o-line, and top notch defense.
.
A friend of mine was all set to place a big order with one of the Chinese sweat shops to crank out some purple 4 jerseys. No doubt this decision of Favre's will be a serious financial hit to him!

Maybe it's a moot point.

The Associated Press just reported that Vikings coach Brad Childress has told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that Favre will not be coming out of retirement. In a report posted on the newspapers’ Web site on Tuesday, Childress said Favre did not want to put himself through the grind of another football season.

So does this mean we've seen and heard the last of Favre's song and dance?

I will be. It is almost a given that at the end of a great career most stars get moved out from their long time teams. Brett still wants to play and should be able to play anywhere he wants. I think at his age leaving the decisions till almost training camp to see if he is healthy enough are correct for both him and the team.
