Jets name for hockey team raises concern
Jets is the name for Janesville’s new team in the Junior A North American Hockey League.
The winner of the naming contest is from Sun Prairie, and that raised the eyebrows of at least one Janesville resident.
The expansion team unveiled its nickname and logo last Friday. Officials told the Gazette that they went with a classic name, appreciated the alliteration of “Janesville” and “Jets” and liked the idea that jets and hockey are all about speed.
The team received more than 200 possible nicknames.
Deb Vesling of Sun Prairie was the winner of the “Name the Team” promotion. She and seven other people submitted Jets. Vesling’s name was chosen randomly from the eight and will receive four complimentary season tickets, a team jersey signed by the inaugural players and the opportunity to drop the ceremonial puck at the first home game. The other seven who submitted “Jets” will each receive a pair of season tickets and attend a special ceremony at the first home game.
Vesling says her son hopes to earn a spot on the team’s roster, and we’re confident that her winning the naming contest is only coincidental to her son’s ambitions, which speak to her interest in the team’s naming contest. I took a call from a local resident this week who wondered why the team would ask city taxpayers to cough up $200,000 worth of upgrades to the Janesville Ice Skating Center and yet allow people from outside the city to enter the naming contest.
I’m sure my caller isn’t the only resident wondering that.
But team officials have said all along that they must attract fans from a wide area to make the franchise financially viable. If officials limited the naming contest to just city residents, they risked offending interested fans from nearby communities.

Just don't let them play against the Sharks, as the choreography would cost the city a fortune.

The ice in the lemonade is where your profit is. You fill the glass with ice and put in a little lemonade to fill in the spaces between the ice. And don't forget to pay the 11 cents in sales tax to the state and county.

BillyDurant & thediplomat...yes! I think we need to see more opinions from you two and less from some others. Why on earth are people complaining about this? Do we have nothing better to do?

What a dumb thing to be pissed off about. Let me ask this questions, "Do you want to attract people other than Janesville residents to these games?" Of course you do (although I don't think you will get them from the Madison area) so letting them be eligible for the contest is only fitting.

What's $200,000.00? We will make up for that amount of taxpayers money in no-time. We will just have to charge a bit more for the pop, popcorn and tickets we sell to all those hundreds of people at every hocky game. Then us taxpayers can all pitch in and sell our plasma to help keep the ice arena going, like many of the out of work Janesville residents are reduced to doing now to make ends meet. What's a few collapsed veins or black and blue marks. Or we can open a lemonade stand at the door and sell lemonade to make money. $2.00 a glass minus the 12 cents per cup and say 20 cents for lemon. We won't give 'em ice. It costs to make ice as we know from keeping the ice arena open. Thats $1.68 cents profit. Lets see, thats 119,047.61 glasses we need to sell. It's befitting to sell one lemon to keep another going.

You've got to be kidding me, right? This is not a news story. Who gives a rats @#$ who thought of the name and where they are from. Jets sounds good to me. Whoever this is bugging has way too much time on their hands and seems like they like to complain and are not a very happy person. Typical Janesville BS.

lakennedy is correct.
Everybody complains about the city's investment in this and assumes it's going to be an expense to the taxpayer. Well, guess what? It's an investment that's expected to make a profit. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. But we can either sit on our hands and not spend a dime and hope that things will get better, or we can be proactive to try to bring revenue into the city. I think this is a much bigger risk for the private investors than the city, anyway.

Let ask OB for the money, or better yet maybe all they cronic complainers can convince OB to sell your shares to the local 95 and re-name the team the Janesville Dynamo.

Again, we need to put this to a referendum. If the citizens want to pay for this, understanding that the money comes from other places where they're making cuts (like education for our children), then fine. My problem with the way things run around here is that it is a big oligarchy, with a few influential people deciding where all our tax money goes. Government by the people for the people? -- I think not.

This another thing that Joe Average will not support.

I suspect the call came from one of the seven other people who choose the name and didn't get their name drawn out of the box.

Did the fine print say the contest was only open to tax-payers from Janesville? If not, then just live with it.

It's important to point out that in order for this venture to be successful, we're going to need support from outside the city. Why not include other areas in the actual naming of the team? If the fact that the idea came from outside of Janesville is what troubles your caller, I urge him or her to place the blame on the lack of imagination within our city limits, not on Deb Vesling...who, by the way, I'd like to congratulate. Come often, Deb. Use your season tickets. While you're here, stop and explore the city. Bring friends.

With little over 200 people entering the contest and some of those coming from outside of the city, it leads one to wonder how much support this really has.

If that's the only thing people have to worry about, they've got too much time on their hands.
