I don't need "Jon & Kate Plus 8"
What is it about train wrecks that so fascinate us?
What is it about watching a spectacular crash in auto racing that lures people like flies to honey?
What is it about "Jon & Kate Plus 8"?
I just don't get the latter. For weeks, this "reality TV show" seemed like a train wreck about to happen. Viewers tuned in to watch the marriage of Jon and Kate Gosselin unravel. What is it with such viewers? Does such a mess somehow make their own problems seem easier?
My stepson and his wife watch this show. I saw a few glimpses of it while we were visiting one weekend. It might be fascinating to see how parents cope with raising sextuplets plus twins. But in this case, under the glare of TV cameras, apparently the Gosselins didn't fare so well. They announced to their TV audience on Monday's episode of the TLC series that they plan to separate amid accusations that both have been unfaithful.
I wonder how big a role the television cameras played in this unfortunate split. Had they just gone about raising their kids out of the public eye, would this couple be doing well and preparing their brood for better lives as part of a unified family?
I don't understand "reality TV" at all. Take "Survivor," for example. Why all the contrived competitions between two teams? Why not just plant a dozen or so people on an island and let them try to find food and water and survive without the games? Wouldn't that be more of a "reality," more realistic and entertaining?
I admit that my wife and I watch "Dancing With the Stars," but I enjoy the dancing only. I could do without the inane questions of the breathless couples, the contrived helpful experiences as couples practice during the week, the equally lame attempts to create drama of competition between the couples, and ABC milking a second night of "entertainment" each week before revealing who gets the boot.
Then, the last episode of the last session, the wrong couple won. It was flat out wrong that Gilles Marini and partner Cheryl Burke didn't win. They were far better dancers than Olympian Shawn Johnson and her partner, Mark Ballas.
Do I sound like I need a better hobby? Well, I have some; that's why I have no time for any other regular TV viewing, including "Jon & Kate Plus 8."

Well I heard that the show has been cancelled and I'm glad. not because of Jon & Kate but because of what the children are going to go through with this divorce! We don't need to see their struggles played out on tv. I do watch the show once in awhile and I remember one particular show where they renewed their vows in Hawaii. Kate said they did it to show the kids they love each other and would be together forever!! these kids must be devastated and think their parents lied too. WOW!

tj64: Kate is a RN by training. Pretty sure if she cancelled the show and got a nursing job, she'd do just fine making ends meet. Assuming, of course, THEY saved some of that 75k per episode coinage! We see 1 hour of their lives per week, so it is unfair to call her a bad mother. However, she cannot let the limelight go. She owes the continuation of the show to her fans? What kind of cockamamie excuse is that? Fans will come and go, but your kids will be your kids forever.
I wouldn't want "p people" looking in my windows either trying to get "thee" shot of their career. How invasive! That's the ONLY reason the news of MJ broke so quick yesterday: the "p people" were parked out front of his house hoping they'd get a shot of him leaving for rehearsal..... So, anyhow, I don't fault Jon or Kate (or my favorite Aiden) wanting a house out in the country away from the mayhem and invasion of privacy. HOWEVER at the same time, one cannot cry "invasion of privacy" if they allow cameras in their home to tape their every move, unflushed poopy toilet and unused coupon. Kate should, perhaps, been more sympathetic to Jon's uneasiness being in the spotlight and Jon, perhaps, could have done a better job sticking up for himself in the situation. But, it is always easier to walk in someone else's shoes......

I watch the show and my 2 year old daughter loves watching the kids. They have problems like any other couple in America...the fact that this has been brewing for some time is however proof that they are using this to get more out of what they call their "family". I heard that they had filed for divorce which means that assets will be divided...in my opinion, that money does not belong to them, it belongs to their kids. They are the only reason that the show John & Kate plus 8 exists. I feel bad for those kids and hope that if John and Kate really did file for divorce, they get a nice judge who realizes that the property they will be fighting over is in reality, not theirs.

I think it's unfair of the people that are commenting that don't even watch the show. And I find it a huge disservice to any other mother to call Kate a bad mother. I do not think she's a bad mother. I think they both made some bad decisions along the way. Either way I am disappointed to see them air the divorce on the show without showing any attempts to resolve the issues first. Not to say they didn't attempt...
By the way, they bought that expensive house because JON didn't like people looking in the windows and over their fence. And JON quit his job to stay home instead...After the 6 were, what 4? and going to preschool. So if you think everything was Kate you are completely wrong.
And as a mother I can see Kate's hesitation at canceling the show if that it to be her only means of supporting her kids if Jon decides not to stay committed to their marriage and family which is what I REALLY suspect happened.

The Gazette ran two great columns on "Jon & Kate," Mitch Albom on June 2 and Leonard Pitts Jr. on June 10.
Unfortunately, these two are among our national syndicates who don't offer us free access to post them on our Web site. So unless you subscribe and get our E-Edition, you didn't read them at gazettextra.com.
Some readers who disagree with the political slants of Pitts and Albom will disagree, but they are two terrific writers. Pitts is a Pulitzer Prize winner, and Albom has written best-selling books. They are two more reasons why you should buy the Gazette's print product. Pick us up on newsstands or call circulation at (608) 741-6650 to subscribe.

I just find it sad, for that family and for society as a whole.
Both parents reportedly said that the children were their top priorities. If that were so, they'd be putting the show aside and dedicating themselves to rebuilding their marriage. Children need an intact, loving family a great deal more than they need thousands of dollars in toys, play equipment, and trips.
Some honesty would be refreshing -- maybe admitting that they don't care for their children nearly as much as they do for money and the pampering of their own bodies and egos? Of course, that's true of a lot of couples and ex-couples in this area, too.

I don't feel sorry for them one bit. At 75K per episode and about 100 episodes or more, that is one chunk of change. They can afford 8 4K custom made playground sets wasting money instead of investing in the kids future. Kate is a snob and whinner and control freak and Jon lets Kate get her way all the time and has been afraid of Kate ruling the roof since day one. No wonder Jon got some from another woman with all that gripping going on. I don't feel sorry for either one of them, but the kids may suffer since they seem pretty emotional/unstable already. If they invest all their money, they can live for a very long time on it without even working for probably 15-20 years or more.

The show WAS about everyday life. Back in the day, that show could have been taped in nearly any home in America. Now, though, how many families live in 1.1 million dollar homes, have BUSES that DRIVE them places, get $1,000 gift cards from Gymboree and other clothiers, have Emeril over for dinner, get a scooter AND chopper made by the guys at American Chopper and get their mommy's birthday cake made by the guy on "Ace of Cakes???" The Gosselin's are no longer the average family with 8 kids trying to do their best. They have graduated to the ranks of celebrities. Like the show "Keeping Up With the Kardashian's." They are no more a normal family than the Jetson's but they don't try to hide or downplay their social status. Kate doesn't look the same much less act or behave the same as she did when the first started...or heck...even as late as last season and that is why I referred to her the way I did. PC? Probably not. Accurate? Probably.

People.com says that the the AP misinterpreted the divorce paperwork and that they have only been living apart as of late. The 5 year olds are adorable and pretty well behaved. Kate herself said she is not home often and Jon is the one who has been doing most of the work...with help. Maddy and Cara are not the most well behaved 8-9 year olds out there. And, that I guess "we" could create Kate with as she was the one who stayed home after their birth.......
I was a fan of the old Kate. The new-media crazed, self-indulged high-end Kate: not so much.

My husband (who unsuspectingly has been caught up in all this J/K+8 drama...I think it is "cute" of him...) just told me today that under Pennsylvania law if a married couple has been living separate for 2+ years, they qualify for a quick and speedy divorce (matter of a few weeks vs months). I imagine Kate (or Jon or their attorneys) found this loophole and used it to their full advantage. Which, is also probably why the show will resume airing new episodes in August.

Rummage: I hear what you are saying. I think Kate being knocked off her little media pedestal can not come soon enough. Of course, all we really know of this whole family is what the media has shown us. In the season premiere, she said she has the kids call the paparazzi "p people" because it is creepy to think the kids go to school and say the paparazzi were following us today. No, Kate. What is creepy is the exploitation of your 8 kids and husband. It was painfully obvious to me (and outsider looking in) that Jon no longer cared to be on that show or in the spotlight. Kate refused to stop the show saying it was for her children and their futures. At 75k AN EPISODE, what kind of future are you trying to bankroll here lady? She has had plastic surgery paid for, gets a $1000 stipend from Gymboree, vacations paid for, and a host of other freebies that are not afforded to the average family. I agree with your assessment of her being a media w*ore.
HOWEVER....I do NOT hope for her (or Jon) to get everything that is coming to them. If that were to happen, there would be 8 innocent VERY suffering little kids in the aftermath of this tornado. Dysfunctional or not, media w*hore or not, it is ALWAYS sad to hear of a marriage dissolving....especially when kids are caught in the middle!

And I can say I do a pretty good job, because I don't know whats going on, and don't want to. I know the jest of it....but I could care less. Haven't seen the show -- I don't own a TV. But darned if some "Jon & Kate" story isn't on the front page of every web news site nowadays, even showing up in my "recommended" Google News feed, which is supposed to reflect my interests. Yeesh. No, I couldn't have told you anything about them other than the title of the show until spring of this year, then all of a sudden they're everywhere.
.
I think it's clear that they will become a textbook example of celebrity destroying people. At the same time, they apparently are doing quite well out of it to the point of exploiting even the bitter divisions between the two of them. I hope they're socking away the winnings, though, because this sort of flash-in-the-pan notoriety does not last.

People are fascinated with reality TV, because it makes them feel better about their own lives. Watching a train wreck helps them confirm that they aren't the only ones with problems. Jerry Springer proved this ages ago. The same holds true for the obsession with celebrities. US and People magazine and TMZ on TV making a fortunate following celebrities. They wait for that one bad shot or one bad interview. It is as if to say "Look they are just like us." The only difference is that they have millions of dollars to show for their train wreck. As a result, the only reality part of this is that they really aren't like us.

I have only seen bits and pieces so I feel like I should not comment much. On that note, I will LOL. From what I have seen, I have wondered what part the media has played in destroying their lives. Not sure. She seems like a person who is not happy with her husband...I did hear her say he breathes too heavy or not right or something on that order. But it is sad to see another family destroyed no matter what the reason. I do watch reality shows, however they tend to be *Smoking Gun* shows LOL

I am sorry but this woman,KATE is stupid. Why anyone would watch this show or ask for her autograph is beyond me. She is not a celebrity as she thinks she is .She is a MOM who has made some very bad choices of late.. NOT that dad is a angel.. But she is a publicity freak. How much money is enough? Evidently she does not think they have enough? She sold her family out for MONEY>>>>>.. They both need to get real jobs and live like the rest of us they will find out its not so bad..Start putting their family first. Cancel this show please. They are example of failure.
