Swine flu prompts changes at church
My wife and I are Catholics and attend Sunday services in Janesville. About a month ago, perhaps longer, our priest told us that the Madison Archdiocese had suggested we not hold hands with those standing next to us when reciting the "Lord's Prayer." Holding hands during that prayer has become a tradition in recent years. Still, some parishioners continue to do so.
He also said that when we come to the point in the service where we greet those around us, if you're feeling ill or uncomfortable about shaking hands, just kindly greet those around you rather than hold our your hand for a shake.
This Sunday, our priest said the church was making more changes. Until the swine flu concerns pass, we no longer will share the wine turned into the "cup of blood." And those distributing Communion wafers are to use hand sanitizer in a bottle sitting next to the altar before proceeding.
Apparently, President Obama's declaration Friday night that the H1N1 flu strain has created a national emergency has gotten the church's attention. To a point, anyway.
Our priest still greets parishioners with hand shakes as they arrive on Sundays, and one of the ushers does the same. It's hard not to shake hands with these personable fellows, but in the back of my mind I'm thinking I'm essentially shaking hands with everyone who arrived at church before we did.
Or maybe it's just me.
Maybe I should just give them friendly nods and "hellos"--or start getting there earlier!

I'm glad! I was getting pretty grossed out during the handshake of peace. Then going up to communion knowing you were going to be handed a host from someone's newly germed-up hands right into my newly germed-up hands...yuck. I'm happy they made changes for flu season! : )
