Do you pick up your dog do?

By GREG PECK ( Contact )   Wednesday, September 9, 2009 - 1:21 p.m.

Did you enjoy that cartoon we printed on our main Opinion Page today?

In case you missed it, I copied it here.

The cartoon made me chuckle, but people who walk their dogs and don't bother to pick up after them are anything but funny.

The wide majority of dog owners are responsible. But I sometimes have to pick up piles on our lawn.

I take a bag every time I walk our dog, who doesn't get down to business until we walk him. If I forget, I double back quickly, even if we're nearly halfway around, hoping he won't get the urge before we return home to get a bag.

Dog owners who don't pick up after their pooches do injustice to responsible people, giving all pet owners a bad name.

Knock it off. If I catch you leaving your dog's poop on my property, expect a lecture.

We always pick up our dogs stuff but I know some that don't. I see them walking without bags all the time. Also hate it when someone walks their huge pooch at night and he poops on our front lawn! They don't pick it up and we have to make sure we do because our grandkids play out there!! show some respect and pick it up! Or else don't have a dog or don't walk them outside your own lawn!

greg, kraut60's post is a case in point. Here's my first post repeated:

Reilly...., it was just a matter of time before someone chimed in here with such complaints. Dog owners are generally slobby. They don't care where their dogs crap and urinate. And the ones here who claim they pick up after their dogs are probably among the ones who carry the bags with them but only pick up if someone is watching.

SwissChick: You commented that retractable leashes should be illegal and most of them are. City ordinances say a leash may be no more than six feet in length.
Those that say they return later and pick up after their dog should also know that the ordinance requires the waste to be picked up within five minutes of being deposited.

Greg, whether it's city property or not, the problem is that there is no law that prohibits anyone from allowing their dog to urinate anywhere.

Feces must be picked up but there's no law that prevents someone from having a dog urinate anywhere, let alone compelling the owner to clean it up.

I had a dispute about this several years ago.

gazettefan: No, I don't know the posters; only a couple of people have told me their user names--otherwise I have no idea who they are. I just have more faith in most of my readers--and dog walkers in general.

But this discussion is bringing up a whole new angle to this issue that I don't consider offensive but some obviously do: Is it so objectionable for a dog walker to let a dog pee on a terrace, which, as I pointed out, is technically city property?

Greg, because your integrity is above average and because you are vouching for the posters here (who you probably know), please consider my previous comment to be properly amended.

But, for the very reasons dogs are great companions, the depositing of their waste anywhere other than the owners' properties should be prohibited. Dogs are not wild animals. They have been bred over thousands of generations to obey.

Because owners' aren't required to have their dogs do their business on the owners' properties is why no one can step comfortably on grassy areas anywhere, including lawns, terraces, and parks.

Sorry, just venting. I'll knock it off now.

I'm ususally pretty tolerant of animals and have two large dogs myself. But I don't take them to pee in the same spots on neighbors lawns every day. She has that dog on one of those retractable leashes too and he walks all the way up and into our yard and around in our bushes. The dog barks at everything which doesn't make it any better.

gazettefan: Most folks walking dogs in my neighborhood do pick up the poop; I wouldn't be so quick to characterize other readers here as ones who would only do so if someone's looking; someone who only picks it up when they know someone's looking is looking for an argument when caught.
Reilly_202: I, too, get irritated by yellow spots on my lawn (not on the terrace) by what is probably urine from other dogs. Our dog pees on the driveway--he's always on a leash that short if we're not walking him, and I try to make him pee on terraces (which, by the way, are technically city property) on his walks.
Ezoner: I'm not so sure about the "great fertilizer" suggestion; I've read at least twice that dog poop is not good fertilizer.

Thank you to those of you who do the responsible thing. However, where I used to live, there was a retired military man (mid-forties or so?) who walked his dog in other people's yards while he stayed on the sidewalk. (He had one of those retractable leashes - which I think shouldn't be allowed). Over a short number of weeks, that damn dog and his owner killed a four foot dogwood tree in our front yard.
.
Nice respect coming from retired military personnel.

ezoner- dog poo is very unhealthy..The parasites carry disease etc.. When you have dog owners that dont pick it up, it is washed into others yards, sewer system etc.. Everyone should pick it up.

We had a neighbor move in recently and found out they walk their dog numerous times day and night just to "go pee pee" in the adjacent lawns. Now, I wouldn't mind this, but they are walking the dog specifically to pee in everyone elses yard. It's killing our grass and we have a son who plays in the front yard. Does anybody else think this is as rude as I do? They also have a fenced in back yard and the dog is a miniature.....

Dog poo is great fertilizer. I see no reason to pick up or remove the excrement. Urine on the other hand kills the grass. So in my opinion, keep your dog in your own yard. Dog urine kills the lawn and I am more concerned about that. I have set up an area to walk or take the dog to. They quickly learn thats where they go.

I have a dog that I love, but hates to go in our own yard. I have to take at least two bags everytime. I'd like to say I'm perfect but I think twice in the last 5 years he's had a super fiber day and done his duty 4 times on a walk. I know at least once I didn't have room in the bag and didn't make it back to that house. If you are out there, I'm sorry, and so is Jack.

Picked up daily even in the winter in our fenced backyard. Good cleanup anytime the snow completely melts throughout the winter as sometimes snow fall manages to cover some before daily cleanup time. Rarely off our property but poop bags used anytime we are off our property.

Mounds sells these really cute poop bag holders that attach to the leash. Everyone thinks it's my cell phone holder! And you can buy the refill bags to go in it. It's so convenient. I HATE picking up her poop, but I don't want some other dog's crap in my yard... Karma

I do not take a bag with me as my prefer to do it in there own yard. I also watch when they go so they do not have the ambition to do it while walking. If they do how ever go while on a walk I do go back and pic it up. Which has only had to happen two times.

I have a poo bag with me at all times just in case. My pup prefers to do his job in the street (he doesn't want his precious feet getting wet from the morning grass I guess), however, I still pick the poo up and take it home. It is just a courtesy, but not sure how much there is of that anymore.

Just a lecture? How about a ding-dong-ditch with a burning bag of do-do?
