Why you should support the United Way

By GREG PECK ( Contact )   Monday, September 14, 2009 - 4:37 p.m.

The Gazette and WCLO/WJVL were named a United Way "Pace Setter" this year. That's because our 2008 donations surged even after we experienced two rounds of layoffs last year.

We report on the needs and even desperation in our community almost daily. That might be one reason why many Gazette and WCLO/WJVL employees, who face some of the same employment problems as other workers around here, gave generously last year. The needs in Janesville, Edgerton, Evansville, Footville, Milton and Orfordville have perhaps never been greater since the Great Depression.

In our editorial Tuesday, we'll share a few thoughts on why you should listen with open minds and hearts to this year's United Way pitch.

Sorry Pete and ktaustin, but you are wrong. United Way of North Rock County does not fund abortions. I presume you think Planned Parenthood is one of their agencies, but they are not. The other popular incorrect rumor is that the local United Way doesn't fund the Boy Scouts; they do.
Here is a list of the local United Way's partner agencies:

HMMMM, I always kind of chuckle when I hear this "worse economy since the great depression"..Great political spin, but really lacking in substance..Do people just forget about the Carter years, and what became known as the "misery index"??..
Where you had the trifecta of double digits...Unemployment, interest rates, and inflation. Of course that is the situation we are heading into now...The depression was a classic deflationary spiral. A scenario that will never happen again; as the feds simply print and borrow $$$ to re-inflate the economy. Eventually the consequences of those actions will be far worse then anything the depression ever was.

I agree, I would rather give (and I do give) to my local church than to United Way. They do alot of good so I don't have a problem with others donating to them, but it's run more like a business than a charity, not to mention the ethical dilemas such as Pete pointed out.
