Our pick in the 1st Congressional District

By GREG PECK ( Contact )   Friday, October 22, 2010 - 12:16 p.m.

Republican Congressman Paul Ryan, a Janesville native, continues to put his home town on the map as he circulates the country touting his fiscally conservative views. In his six two-year terms, he has grown in stature out in Washington.

Ryan’s opponent on Nov. 2 is John Heckenlively, a Democrat from Racine.

Do you think Heckenlively is a worthy foe?

We’ll share our views on the two candidates in our endorsement editorial Saturday.

dini79: You have a good point, but we're a company trying to maintain paying customers through our print product and withhold some content from our free website in order to encourage more people to continue to buy our printed newspaper. That's why you don't read our letters to the editor online even though you can submit them online. That's why you don't read Sound Off or Anna Marie Lux's columns online, etc.

I know Ryan well enough to recognize him and realize that he is in Janesville as often as he can be. I also know that he isnt always campaigning while here because I always see him with his wife and or kids. He dresses in jeans, shops locally, listens to constituents when they talk to him and is a pretty decent person. I dont agree with him on every political issue but I sure am going to vote for him

Matt, you don't have to be a slave to the two-party system. The Gazette will only give you more of the same! Vote third party!

In a little over one week, I plan on making a salad. I was hoping the Gazette Editorial Board would tell me which dressing is best. I usually go with Ranch, but some of my friends like Thousand Island. I can respect that, their tastes are different than mine.

I don't want the Gazette to do research and point out the subtle variations of each dressing, I want them to tell me which one to use. The clock is ticking, and I'm starting to panic, please help!

Greg, if the Gazette considers its endorsements to be a community service, shouldn't they appear on the website?

I would think that the tea partiers, and the fiscal conservatives would vote Ryan out.

Ryan never created a job, or balanced a budget.

The deficit has skyrocketed during his time in office. He voted for every budget so by your logic he is a "big spender".

He spends very little time in the district. He spends more time with the Wall Street Journal crowd than he does with us. Elites, indeed.

Teapublicans, seems like you argue against reelecting Ryan.

To be honest I have not seen Ryan bring any industry or jobs to this district in his 12 yrs in office. He does collect his pay check and has the best health insurance. The only time one sees him is when it is campaign time again. He then blows a good smoke screen.

I'm voting Libertarian because they don't believe in initiating violence against others that are no threat to them.
You cannot sat the same for Republicans, or Democrats.
Paul Ryan:
Voted YES on allowing electronic surveillance without a warrant.
Voted YES on continuing intelligence gathering without civil oversight
Voted YES on continuing military recruitment on college campuses
