What to do with old electronics
Chances are, you have old computer equipment, perhaps an outdated stereo and maybe even an old TV sitting in your basement.
Or, maybe not. Maybe you took advantage of the opportunity to dispose of these last Saturday during Universal Recycling Technologies' free drop-off at the Janesville Mall.
If not, you have another chance to do so this Saturday. URT is conducting a second free collection from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at its headquarters, 2535 Beloit Ave., on Janesville’s south side. It will take almost any electronic item except for air conditioners and large refrigerators and freezers.
Why is URT offering these free drop-offs, and why is it important that you take advantage of them? We’ll explain in our editorial Friday.

I made a comment on another article regarding old computers, I am a local nerd trying to learn how to repair computers, and I will come and pick up used/broken computers anywhere in Janesville for free, anything I don't use will be properly recycled. If you're interested, message me via this site. If this post is against the rules, please remove it. Thanks

I just went to the Crimestoppers drop-off by Sam's. It’s set up like a drive-thru, just load everything in your trunk, drive up, and a very friendly staff will unload everything for you. There was about a 2 minute wait in the line, that’s it. Very easy and well thought out. It goes until 2p – highly recommended!

Gazelle may not have great customer service, but they are partnered with some big names like Costco, Walmart, and Office Depot, so I doubt they're a "scam" as such.

One of the best directories of recycling options is Earth911. Put in your zip code and you can find where to recycle what in your area. Still, URT is a great company -- one of the leading electronics recyclers -- and we're lucky to have it here in Janesville.

.
If you can't find a place to recycle something, most major electronics manufacturers have some type of recycling acceptance by mail. Unfortunately, these may not go to the US but to a sweatshop-style stripping company overseas, many in China, where the workers aren't adequately protected and the factory itself becomes a contaminated zone.
.
baegucb, that's exactly what they do -- break the electronics down to the reusable components. Some electronics have industrially valuable metals inside -- not enough to make you rich, and sometimes toxic if you open them up, but enough to pay for the stripping process.

There’s a sign on Humes road that says Best Buy is having an electronics collection Saturday from 10a – 1p. I’m not sure if it’s a freebie, there weren’t details and the sign went by kinda fast. A good journalist might want to check on that, maybe give an update here? This would be a good alternative for the north siders.

Gazelle.com is a well known scam, like the TV ads, cash for gold. They advertise on 107.3 using another name. I dropped off 2 CRT monitors (one still working), 1 old TV, an old PC, some motherboards, and a bunch of other cards, Who needs a 56k internal modem anymore? If URT can find a use for that stuff, good luck. I expect they mine the stuff for the metals.

gazelle.com will send you a package and pay you for your old electronics. Usually not a lot but somethings better than nothing or you can donate your proceeds to a charity
