Is good news for Belvidere good news for Rock County?
No doubt, many former workers at Janesville’s General Motors plant and its subsidiaries have moved on. They’ve retired, retrained for other careers or moved elsewhere for work.
Is the news, however, that Chrysler will add 1,800 workers for a third shift at its Belvidere, Ill., plant good news for these former Janesville workers? Will some of them find the opportunity attractive, despite starting pay at about $16—less than half of that earned by longtime employees? Will Belvidere also boost employment hopes for those who've never worked in the auto industry?
We’ll share our perspectives in our editorial Tuesday.

Uncle Jesse: I believe everyone who goes into a UAW plant is considered part time until they get 90 days in, at which point they can join the union and be considered full time. That hasn`t changed since at least 1973 when I hired in.

"despite starting pay at about $16 an hour".......I've got an inbox of about 200 resumes that would cut off their left arm for 16 bucks an hour.

The largest number of people being hired at one time and good wages to boot, it is a good thing .
and Chrysler normally hires their people in as part time to start i believe .

That's in the ballpark of what some IT jobs in Janesville are paying, and it does say starting pay.

Sounds like great news. Sixteen dollars per hour is not bad and is far better than unemployment. One can also look for another job if a better paying position opens somewhere else. That is sort of the old fashioned way of doing it.
