Is Ryan ripe for possible VP?
Speculation continues about a running mate for Mitt Romney, the assumed Republican presidential nominee.
Congressman Paul Ryan of Janesville was one of five possible vice presidential picks whose photographs adorned my TV screen last night during an "NBC Nightly News" report that suggested Romney’s decision might come this week.
This morning on the “Today” show, however, the same NBC reporter gave his VP summary, but only three possibilities were pictured—Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.
Does that mean Ryan’s chances diminished overnight? That’s unlikely.
Even the possibility that Romney might choose Ryan means heady political discussions for this community and helps put Janesville on the national map. What do you think are Ryan’s odds of being selected and agreeing to run with Romney?
How do you think Ryan would help or hurt Romney’s chances of beating President Obama in November?

Liberals afraid of Sarah Palin?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
The repubs don't want her at their convention.
Not even reality TV wants her.
Snooki is more relevant than Sarah Palin.

Ryan would destroy our country along with Romney. He is another one that is all for corporations and taking from the little people. He is against the very thing this country is about. Equal Rights, The right to choose, Fair Wage, on and on. He is Part of a Group of GOPs that are so against the people that need help and wants to take more from them. The bill he tried to push was to take anything he could from the medicare/medicaid/Social Security. People have worked years and paid into this and The GOP have no right to touch it....Him and Romney would make this a Third world Country.

The only thing Medicare needs “saving” from is Republican Paul Ryan’s axe that he wants to destroy it with. Ryan’s plan is not Medicare – it is RyanNoCare.

Both political parties have been raiding this program for years, thinking they'd be able to pay it off. Sound familiar? But all of us who are close to the point of
ryan's cut off believe, once again, that we are getting screwed. The point I made was never addressed in some of these comments after my post. Maybe someone will address what I actually said, and not put their politics before the answer.

NO. Although Paul Ryan would be a good VP. He like Palin would be crucified by Liberals and the liberal media. They are afraid of him as they are afraid of Palin. Besides, He is a more valuable asset serving where he is and can do more good than serving as VP. Look to Rubio for VP
Good post Wislady

It would be a mistake to let Ryan run right now, he is primed for a 2016 Presidential run, Romney doesnt have a snowballs chance this go and running for VP would burn Ryans credentals for a run in 16

wislady, Medicare does not need saving, any more than the Wisconsin Employee Trust Fund needs Walker's meddling. The part that does need fixing is Part D, the drug benefit Bush passed without any long-term funding solution attached to it. But when you Republicans keep saying Medicare is in some sort of crisis, you're only talking to yourselves. It's a lie.
.
I do hope the GOP nominates a liar to support Romney, who's been lying about his involvement with Bain and his outsourcing of American jobs. That would make for a fun fall.

I don't think Romney will pick Ryan because Ryan would (or should, at least) refuse. It would be a demotion for Ryan to be VP.
Short of a world-class incident trashing Obama before the election, I think we'll be stuck with 4 more years of muddling and flubbing.

Romney won't pick Ryan because Ryan's budget plan; AKA, Path to Prosperity, isn't something Romney wants to embrace. Ryan would not help Romney in Florida, a crucial swing state that Romney desperately needs.
My guess is Romney goes the safe route with Rob Portman, the Ohio Senator.

Professor
What is the specific plan that dems have put forth to save Medicare?
In March of 2010, democrats/Obama cut $500 Billion from Medicare, as a result of Obamacare.
The democrats plan for Medicare, are to continue cutting benefits to fund the Obamacare.
Also, the Obama Medicare plan cuts payments to doctors and hospitals by 30%.
Doesn't sound like much a plan to me.
Instead of using liberal tactics and demonizing someone who actually has a plan, why not tell us exactly the plan the democrats have...other than the one I just posted. If more cuts on benefits, and the use of the "panel" are all they have for a solution, we are really in trouble.

Ryan wouldn't hurt Romney, but he really wouldn't help him, either. Wisconsin is going Romney anyway - Obama would need one more vote to win Wisconsin than Governor Walker got in the recall, and there just aren't that many Liberal votes. Ryan doesn't really help because he wouldn't pull in any extra votes. Sure, he's a nice guy, competent and a good debater because he knows his stuff, but a state like FLorida is much more important and much more in play than Wisconsin. My money says Romney picks Senator Marco Rubio from FLorida. NOw, if Romney wins, then I'd say put Ryan at Secretary of the Treasury maybe, but Vice-president - no. I also think Ryan doesn't really want it - he has young kids and it's just not the right time. Also, do the people of Janesville really want the press around? Hell no....

Is he qualified...Yes...but so is a chimpanzee, as that is what we continue to get in these high offices...and on Both sides...
Is he Ripe ??? Yes again, but because he stinks from all the butt kissing and rolling over forgetting what the common Janesville citizen is all about...
Look at all the negative Presidential adds, most of which are disgusting at best..
Time to vote against all these bums whenever possible, and Paul is a good example....

greymaster, if Ryan were to be elected as VP, he would have to resign as Congressman. He would need to run for re-election and win, of course, as Congress takes office (Jan. 3) before the White House inaugurations (Jan. 20). He will not have to resign to RUN for VP, though.
.
TCB is generally correct -- the VP selection is considered to have more effect on shaping the campaign overall than affecting the vote. Before the Civil War, regionalism was a real factor in American politics, though, and the South has seen its influence as a region continue, with a Southerner as President or Vice President beginning with Carter in 1976 and ending with Bush in 2009.

Is he qualified? Absolutely. But too many people, primarily those in the media, give too much credence to the VP selection. People vote primarily for president-not for Vice President. Biden, John Edwards, Quale, Gore, all terrible candidates on their own did not motivate people to vote for or against the top of the ticket.
Paul Ryan is far more powerful in Congress than as VP.

Amen, arman...funny how we can find money for wars we can be lied into, or tax breaks that mainly benefit the uber-rich, but when it comes to the 'basics' for 'Joe Sixpack and his family', well, then it gets complicated.

If you took 10% of what was blown on Iraq and put it towards SSI and Medicare they both would be in good shape with a little left over for the Post Office.

Wislady--there is a long chasm between doing nothing and doing what Ryan wants to do. Neither social security nor Medicare need be gutted to fix them, as Ryan proposes. Neither is like Ben Tre, Viet Nam--where the American Major said, "It became necessary to destroy the town in order to save it." Ryan has done little for anybody but his rich colleagues.

I would like to see him unemployed that is my wish. Most would like to keep Medicare and social security that he wants to eliminate. So his rich friends can get more tax breaks.

I don't think he would accept the offer of VP either, I certainly hope not. I like him where he is, for now. If we are unfortunate enough to end up with Obama again, Ryan can run for president in next election....if America still exists.

The first question is whether or not Ryan would agree to run with Romney. I don't think so. He is still on the rise, and won't take a chance latching on to a questionable candidate. That being said, I don't believe he will be selected, as they would never select someone only to be rejected. (I'm sure they know these things ahead of time.)
If he were to agree, and were selected, I think it would have little affect on romney's chances. It seems that people perceive Ryan as a "Republican's Republican". That will help him with republicans, but hurt him with the non-partisans.
Bottom line in my mind is that Obama wins by slight margin. That is okay by me, as I've always felt that 4 years is too short a term. Presidents should serve one and only one 6-8 year term.IMO
