Does district’s Chinese program make sense?
Some Janesville School District residents were understandably alarmed and even ticked off to learn that Superintendent Karen Schulte and school board member Kristin Hesselbacher were in China. These residents assumed their tax dollars were paying for this eight-day trip that sought partnership schools for exchanges of teachers and students.
That assumption, however, was incorrect. District officials say the Hanban/Confucius Institute of China paid for the trip, as Frank Schultz reported in Wednesday’s Gazette.
Concerns about trip costs thus erased, let’s step back and look at the big picture: Just what is the point of such a trip, and what might be the benefits?
This will be the subject of The Gazette’s editorial Saturday.
