What makes you give thanks?
As her letter in today’s Gazette describes, Michelle Hacker went to the Rock County 4-H Fairgrounds in Janesville on Saturday to pick up Thanksgiving fixings offered through ECHO, or Everyone Cooperating to Help Others. This single, disabled mother saw a long line and suggested to her daughter that perhaps she should have taken along her walker. Instead, she got her food quickly because the line was actually the hundreds of volunteers.
“We feel truly blessed to know that so many in our community care,” Hacker wrote in her letter.
Most residents in Janesville and around southern Wisconsin will find much to be thankful for when they gather Thursday with friends and families to celebrate Thanksgiving.
For what are you most thankful?
We’ll reflect on life in our slice of southern Wisconsin and share our Thanksgiving thoughts in our editorial Wednesday.

I found out this afternoon that my brother in law was accidentally shot during a deer hunt, I am thankful that he is still alive. He has been in surgery in LaCrosse all evening and sounds like he will come through it ok.

Thankfulness is the product of humility. Humility is the realization that one is not the center of the universe. We are not the sole architects of our lives. Many people (God, particularly) had a hand in our construction and well being. These people are the ones to whom we all should be thankful. No man is an island, the poet said (John Donne (1572-1631)). Thanksgiving day is a day to remember those who made our lives both possible and prosperous.

I see that in your blog you asked it correctly but the headline question would demand a totally different answer than what am I thankful for. I know, you were just wondering if anyone would see that.

Greg, it seems you should have worded the question, "What Are You Thankful For?" But it is, "What Makes You Give Thanks?" So what makes me give Thanks is my belief in God and that He controls our destinies and what life gives us.

Been there, done that Birdman. I too have a greater appreciation, for EVERYTHING. A can of Lima beans and ham are even a tasty thought.

Clean water. And a shower.
. . .
Forty-four years ago I was about to observe the first of two Thanksgivings in Viet Nam. EVERY DAY ( we need italics) I am mindful of how fortunate we are to be able to simply turn a faucet handle and have clean, abundant water!

Everyday is a gift from God. I am most thankful for my health, my beautiful children and their spouses, and most of all for the blessing of 7 beautiful, healthy grandchildren. I truly miss the many great friends and people that are no longer in my life and to that I say "Don't sweat the small stuff!!!??

Considering the odds of being born in the USA are about 22 to 1, I'd say I'm thankful for just being here.

Sigma40, what a miserable point of view. Coming from someone who was within 24 hours of death this summer due to a Bacterial infection I can say I have much to be thankful for. Life itself is a gift, my family and friends who supported me with their kind words, thoughtfulness and prayers during my month long hospitalization was a gift. The beautiful weather we are having is something to be thankful for. Sounds like you live in a prison of your own making.

How can US citizens feel thankful when so much is taken from them? Are we supposed to still think that "freedom" is a gift? From who? And without comparing it to any other country (irrelevant), how is what we call "freedom" even remotely free? One could easily say they are thankful for not living in a communist country, but then again one could say they are thankful they dont live on Mars and the meaning is the same....irrelevant. What do we have here that we can truely be thankful for?
