Will you be getting a flu shot?

By GREG PECK ( Contact )   Monday, October 15, 2012 - 5:25 p.m.

Some people have lots of excuses for skipping flu shots.

“I don’t have time.”

“I got one a couple of years ago and got the flu anyhow.”

“I can’t afford the shot.”

Are these valid excuses? Which one do you use? Or do you get the flu shot regularly each fall?

Here at The Gazette, the lack of time isn’t an excuse. Our company has been bringing in a nurse to administer shots at our downtown office for years, and I’ll be getting one this month.

We’ll share our perspectives on the value of the annual flu vaccine in our editorial Tuesday.

Approximately 36,000 Americans die each year from the Flu. None of whom get the Flu from a Flu shot.

UNtreated flu strains evolve into different strains much more rapidly than TREATED strains can aid the evolution of those UNtreated strains -unlike how antibiotics can aid in the evolution of stronger bacteria.

Excuse? Really? You think I need an "excuse" to make my own decisions as to what goes into my body and what doesn't? OK, then - my "excuse" is that I am an educated adult, fully capable of washing my hands and eating a diet that supports my immune system, who does not need or want toxic chemicals in my bloodstream.

"mandatory where I work, holding out for mercury free one, and I am against forced vaccinations."
.
WOW; I would quit on the spot!
I would take a arsenic drink before anyone injected that crap into me!

True, JCK, it's impossible to get the Flu from a Flue shot. The injection is dead material.

saxcat, untreated flu strains evolve into different strains much more rapidly than treated strains can aid the evolution of those untreated strains -unlike how antibiotics can aid in the evolution of stronger bacteria.

The more people don't get Flue shots, the more a given strain, or strains, is allowed to survive and spread in a given season. Therefore, getting the shot is beneficial.

I got mine 2 weeks ago at my scheduled checkup. It gives me peace of mind and I don't like having the flu. I feel it is one shot we should get to protect others too.

mandatory where I work, holding out for mercury free one, and I am against forced vaccinations. All of our residents get flu shots, so if it is truly effective, the argument that we need them to prevent giving the flu to our patients is not valid. for those who don't know, the 'preservative' thimerosol IS mercury, and mercury is a POISON, not an allergen. I've gotten the flu in the past and gotten/not gotten the flu. years I've not gotten the shot, I've gotten/not gotten the flu. I seem to get hit every other year regardless.

Encouragment for mass immunizations (even recommended for a PANdemic that didn't happen) bother me. Pneumonia, flu, swine flu, bird flu, HPV, now one being advertised for shingles if you had chicken pox when you were a child. I'm sure I've left out a few. No thank you.

Whether or not to get the injection is based on each individual and their medical history and condition.

That is controversial still, however, I was told to get the injection. There are some specific cases of "autoimmune disorders" that definitely should not get the injection. Like everything, the risk of getting the flu must be weighed, along with the possible reactions and the impact that getting the flu might have on you.
It is also a good idea to get the pneumovax injection (for people over 50)....at least that one is good for a few years. Again, that is specific to the individual, but many people die from pneumonia related causes.

That you can get the flu from the vaccine is one of the most believed myths surrounding the flu. You can not get the flu from the vaccine. Injected flu vaccines only contain a dead virus. The nasal mist vaccines are specially engineered to remove the parts of the virus that make people sick.

Taken from WebMD: "Despite the scientific impossibility of getting the flu from the flu vaccines, this widespread flu myth won’t die. Experts suspect two reasons for its persistence. One, people mistake the side effects of the vaccine for flu. While side effects to the vaccine these days tend to be a sore arm, in the past, side effects often felt like mild symptoms of the flu. Two, flu season coincides with a time of year when bugs causing colds and other respiratory illnesses are in the air. Many people get the vaccine and then, within a few days, get sick with an unrelated cold virus. However, they blame the innocent flu vaccine, rather than their co-worker with a runny nose and cough."

wislady".....autoimmune disorders...."
Check with your DR FIRST. Thisis why I cannot take the shot. Have autoimmune and on meds. You cannot take the shot!!!
saxcat- I agree with you for once.
I got the upper resitory flu once many years back. It was terrible. Held on to me for 5 months or so. I still never did a flu shot because I didn't prefer to be "given" a flu with the flu shot. No thanks.
Just wash your hands. Stay away from sick people. Use those wipes they provide now at supermarket. Eat right, sleep enough, take vitems, excersize. I am extra suseptable and I hardly get ill.

I firmly believe that there is some truth to the fact that the more we "immunize" ourselves, the more we are opening ourselves to further risk.

Because the flu typically doesn't hit it's peak until February I usually wait until later in November to get vaccinated. A Dr once told me that getting vaccinated earlier could result in the vaccine being ineffective later in the flu season.

Thimerosol is a preservative, some people are allergic to it (as I am).

http://www.fda.gov/BiologicsBloodVaccine...

Some people never get the flu shot, but for people who have autoimmune disorders, it is highly recommended.

Already got it. See, Ive had the flu 2 times--the last time was the H1N1..so I know what THATS like..and I thought I was going to die. I was that sick. I get the flu shot every year, and yes, out of all those years, 2 years I got the flu. But there is NO way that the flu shot can protect from every strain out there. Im just thankful it protects me from the ones it does.

wislady: How do you find out if vac you are getting has preservative or not?
.
Last time I got the flu was about 15 years ago, which turned into pneumonia. Been getting the vac every since, and have not had flu since.
.
Flu is a respiratory illness, accompanied by muscle aches, fever, cough, similar to a cold, but more severe. But many people who think they have had flu actually had a stomach/gastro sickness.

Kiddo got one again this year, but I will not. Lately I have had bad reactions to the shot, so I am opting out of it. Last year is the first year in 15 years I did not get the shot, and it was the first year that I did not get the flu...

illdrink- also if weakened immunities because of medications and I am sure there are a couple more reasons. I never got it in the past and prob wouldn't get it anyway. As Slickster said there are MANY strains any way.

I got the flu shot for the 1st time last year and I got the flu for the first time in 55 years.....though I don't believe there as a connection between getting the flu and the shot. I do believe that the shot does not immunize you against many of the flu strains.

People should ask what ingredients are in the shot. If one does a little research one will find that they are of poisoness nature. I have never had a flu shot and never will get one.
