In 44th District, will it be Knilans or Kolste?
The 44th Assembly District encompasses most of the city of Janesville. Republican Rep. Joe Knilans is seeking a second two-year term against Democrat Deb Kolste.
Knilans formerly worked at General Motors in Janesville and went to Madison with three goals in mind—improve our local and state economy, balance the state’s budget and bring jobs here.
Has he done this well enough and with the right votes?
Kolste has served our community in charities and as a Janesville School Board member. She has a background in business, agriculture and health care. Does she have better ideas?
We’ll share our perspective in our endorsement editorial Thursday.

I hate to question your reading ability older but salary means just that. What you are saying is simply not true. Pull up Janesville School District and select "see all." The "salary" will be listed in one column and their "fringe" will be listed in another. They are independent of one another. Add both together and you get total compensation package. In the graph take Karen Schulte as an example. She gets $150,000 as a salary and then the value of her "fringe" benefits is $27,577. She has a total compensation package of $177,577. How is that difficult to understand?

Repeating the same silly lack of math skills and assumptions wont get you anywhere Bill. Your 60% number is based on a whole lot of assumptions, and you know it. went down this road with you on another thread and am getting tired of disproving your assertions. Facts are facts, you run head to head in this community in a school board race, YOU LOSE, and YOU KNOW IT!! Everyone in town knows what you are and what you stand for. I just wish you would leave the board and run for City council, they could use you, the BOE could do without your services.
That being said, STOP talking about the redrawn districts, THE facts are that Joe DID NOT LIVE in the 44th when he was originally elected, and you can talk circles around it all you like. That should have been investigated at the time. Now he is running in the district in which he lives and will be beaten. Gotta love karma. Deb has my vote as well.
believe me Bill I wish that this town had one on one electons for school board, if you believe that what you are doing is better for the SCHOOLS and KIDS in this district you would have no problem with it either. Unfortunately you are a money/bottom line guy and thats why you are there, not for the betterment of educating kids in Janesville. I still wonder if any of YOUR customers at asked you to renegotiate a contract in the middle of it because of financial hardship if you would be open to that? Highly doubtful.
Is it me that is lying Bill, or is it you that likes to manipulate numbers and facts to make yourself and your party look like you are above the fray? Your election numbers are based on assumptions not facts as you stated. You would NEVER garner 50% of the vote in a Janesville School Board election, you are a Right Wing conservative, Janesville is a BLUE town about 60-40 and we know why you are on the board.

JV93 you do not comprehend. Salary plus fringe is the approx. $75,000 total package. Negotiated as a whole, not a salary and benefits. The link you posted clearly shows this. The higher the paycheck amount the less that goes to fringe. The lower the paycheck more goes to fringe. A starting teacher will have gross wages of ~$45,000 and ~$30,000 will be applied to fringe. One close to retirement will have gross wages of ~$65,000 and ~$10,000 will go towards fringe. At no time does a teacher get ~$75,000 in gross wages and ~$15,000 in fringe benefits.

Expect honesty, sincerity, and decisions made in the best interests of the community with Deb. It is nice to see a politician that does not engage in political attack ads. It is also nice to have a candidate willing to think for themselves and not just take out their rubber stamp (99.48%).
.
I did not vote in the last 44th district election. I am voting for Deb Kolste in this election.

fear - If you would actually read what I wrote you would understand that the home Joe purchased many months ago is in the 44th district and with redistricting, his previous home is also now in the 44th. I (and even others) have also corrected you many times about your "20% election" comment, but you continue to repeat it. Once again, if a person gets 20% of the vote in an election where you select up to 3 candidates, then you can roughly calculate that about 60% of the people that voted included that candidate. In my case it would mean that more than 2/3rds of the people that voted included me.
As I said, repeating a lie does not ever make it true no matter how hard you may try.

Leave it to "Rocksolid" to put forth his "truth". Thats right Bill I forgot they "re-drew" the lines so now he is a resident. I was in fact referring to the election in which he won the office. I am sure like many other prominent Repubs you and Joe are buddies, very hard to get a response from him if you arent towing the line , OR trying your hardest to get the teachers to re-open their SETTLED contract with amendments and other tricks.
Funny that you would support him since the both of you went on your little PR campaign against the teachers contract after Act 10 was passed. Funny thing is you wonder why you are viewed in this community by so many the way you are? I have tried to contact Knilans on several occasions, nothing but form letters in response, hows about representing your constituents, not just the ones whose votes you know you have?
Unlike you Bill he will need more than 20% of the vote to get re-elected.
I wonder why Knilans was "renting" his brothers basement out for the last election? Its quite easy to make things appear as they are all good, especially when all you need to do is re-draw the lines to make it so. Was his "old house" in the last district Bill? If so then why did he rent his brothers basement out?
More lies, or more misdirection? What a silly, silly man you are! I think its terrible what some people do to be recognized in society, especially when their only interest is to tear it down, and tear it apart, please go away!! Run against Deb next time, and leave the board!!

Once again I stand by my comments. If you don't make teaching an attractive career path, then you lose out on enticing the best and brightest from becoming teachers. If there was not tenure, it would be very easy for administrations to keep teachers right up to within a few years of retirement and find a reason to fire them and having them lose their retirement. And so what if they get 3 months off? It's part of the benefits of being a teacher. Teachers use that time to obtain continuing education credits as required (and out of their own pockets). Once again the salary and benefits that teachers earn is not outrageous. You only feel they are because they are taxpayer funded. Education is critical to the future of America. It should be the last place cuts are ever made instead of the first.

Teachers pay their retirement and healthcare. it is part of that $75,000, not on top of it. None get $75,000 a year in direct wages.

Hey Big Mike
Just because you have a Masters Degree doesn't mean you are "entitled" to earn a salary of $75,000/year. the real question is are you "worth" $75,000/year.
I have no doubt that there are teachers that are worth $75,000 or more a year.
However under the union concept you are paid that amount of money whether or not you deserve it because you belong to a Union.
The vast majority of working people out there, whether they have a " Masters Degree" or not, have to prove themselves year after year based on a performance evaluation. In a Union whether you deserve a raise or not, whether your work performance is excellent or poor you get a raise. Moreover you are able to attain TENURE. That means no matter how you perform, no matter what degree you have you are guaranteed a job and salary. Really is that fair!
How many people out in the real world have 3 months vacation, free health care benefits and free fully funded retirement plan. Maybe you don't realize this but when you add up the value of those outrageous benefits there total compensation package is "outrageous".

No matter who is running against Mr. Knilans I will not vote for him. He came in to my place of employment (where I am a custodian) and wouldn't condescend to speak to me. He just looked down his nose at me and walked on by. Regardless which party you are with if you are for the people you should at least speak to them and show them the respect that they deserve. From what I have heard of Kolste, she has my vote. In case you teacher haters have been living under a rock for the last year or so the teachers DO pay a portion of their healthcare (which in Janesville is self funded). The way the Walker cronies are taking things away is just wrong. He keeps trying to do things that are unconstitutional. The way politics is going I don't think there is a great choice to vote for, you just have to go with the best of the candidates that makes you the least sick. If you are a Christian, you cant go with the ones that call themselves Christian because the things they are doing are as bad as the "non-Christian". I know I covered a lot of subjects but I had to let it all out on here because it has been a while sense I have posted.
God bless all! :-)

outrageous salaries? So a person with a masters degree shouldn't be able to make 75K because they are teacher and teacher's salaries come from taxes? That's absurd. How about if we don't require any college education for teachers and pay them 10 bucks an hour with no beneifts? It seems to me that some people won't be happy until that is the case. There is only one way to recruit good teachers and it is with the promise of good pay and benefits. Stop giving the super rich tax breaks, close the giant loop holes in the tax code for off shore bank accounts and start taxing investment income like regular income. Make everyone pay their fair share.

Now I understand..
Teachers are better than everybody else!
Teacher's jobs are more important than the average working person's job!
Teachers consider themselves elite!
That's how they justify their outrageous salaries and free benefits
Shame on Deb Kolste for supporting these types of people over the average everyday working person who struggles to keep food on the table for their family

Once again it is sickening to see how some people undervalue the teaching profession. It seems to be nothing other than pure jealousy. I'm sorry your job does not provide you a pension and health benefits at retirement. If you don't provide good wages and benefits to teachers then you cannot attract the best and brightest college students to become teachers. You lose them to the private sector. Most teachers have Masters Degrees and education far beyond what most successful private sector people ever will have, yet you want to pay them less and strip benefits. It makes no sense. Education is the foundation for a strong society. I will never vote for a candidate who values stripping and undercutting education. Especially when it comes to giving large tax breaks to these so called "job creators".

Once again people like "fearandrhetoric" continue to lie. Joe completeley fulfilled the law by residing in the district while he was searching for a new home and trying to sell his existing home in this economy.
You should know that he was successful and moved into his new house many months ago.
The irony is that the new re-drawn district lines actually now include his old home as well as his present home.
I doubt that facts will stop people like "fear" from continuing their false claims but I thought I would try anyway.

Deb Kolste is a UNION ACTIVIST. Her major priority. if she is elected. will be to work hard to restore the zero cost health benefit and the zero contributory pay retirement benefits to unions.
Guess who pays for that...we do because of higher taxes, She doesn't care about the majority of the citizens of Janesville who struggle to pay for their health benefits and have to contribute to their own retirement plan.
She just wants us pay higher taxes to support her UNION friends.

jv93, NOTHING about what you posted is reality. Just a bucnh of fear mongering blather from someone who believes that this nation is better with one party running everything. Wanna play the fear game? what party was in charge of all three branches of government from 2000-2008? Marched us into 2 unpaid for wars, and led us into the greatest financial calamity , and greatest terrorist attack of my lifetime? wanna play the fear game I can play that game too. I would rather live in reality.
The reality is that Knilans doesnt even live here. He has NOT been available to his constituents and is a rubber republican stamp. That is a reality. Janesville and the 44th are Blue and Joe will be looking for another vjob very soon. The ONLY reason he won before is because Sheridan was hated by everyone. Deb Kolste is a very respectable , honorable person. Anyone who says anything different is a mear merchant pushing a BS political point, nothing more. Time for Joe to rent another basement out, LOL

I'm voting for Joe. Wisconsin got concealed carry law because Diamond Jim Doyle could see the writing on the wall and bailed, and Joe was one of the legislators who helped pass the bill for Governor Walker to sign. He helped put the brakes on the teacher's union machine that was squeezing school district budgets for all they could.

If you vote for Kolste you are voting to go back to multi-billion dollar deficits and an increase in your property taxes that will be the most chilling increases you have ever felt. Wisconsin would return to being controlled by the public employee unions who believe they should never be affected by the economy. They believe they should get 3-6 percent raises until infinity, pay zero for their retirement, and pay zero for their healthcare. The taxpayers are last according to Kolste and she made this very clear in interviews she has given. She is so brazen in her desire to spend it reminds one of Jim Doyle. Return to that? Never. Knilans does the difficult job of saying no. It is not popular but it takes courage and resolve to be financially disciplined. The only rational vote is for Knilans.

Joe Knilans, without a doubt, is the right choice for the 44th Assembly District seat.
He is a fiscal conservative who has reduced spending. kept taxes low for all the citizens and helped balance the state budget( we now have a surplus)
His opponent, Deb Kolste, is a tax and spend liberal who has no problem spending money while having us pay for it with higher taxes. In fact she has a history of doing this while on the Janesville School Board.
Vote for Joe!!!
