Is fundraising during budget talks a good idea?
The Assembly Organization Committee voted 5-3 along party lines last Thursday to again open the door to fundraising during budget deliberations. The vote lets Assembly members, their campaign committees and support committees raise money anywhere except in Dane County, unless their districts include that county.
The ban was enacted under Democratic control and continued in the last session under then-Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald, R-Horicon. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Burlington, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the change returns the Assembly to matching how the Senate conducts its business.
Is this a big concern or no big deal?
We’ll share our perspectives in our editorial Thursday.

Money talks Greg...of course it's an issue. It's a non issue when you don't have any money to 'play' but corporate interest and lobbyist certainly care about purchasing votes in their favor and less opportunity for a 'tit for tat' arrangement, the better. Furthermore, it takes away from the focus. If all wages and benefits ceased in Washington DC until a budget was passed, would they show up and work harder instead of this stale mate? I'm not saying that's what should happen...it's merely to make the point that fundraising when you are in the heighth of your term and making the most critical decisions for the people you represent, you shouldn't be 'bankrolling' your campaign fund. It's SIX months of a 2-year term...really?
