A new restaurantand it’s not part of a chain!
I’m not a restaurant critic, nor would I take that on as a second job. I do like to eat, however, and I can tell you that my wife, Cheryl, and I enjoyed dining at a new restaurant in Janesville last Friday night. Even better—while Janesville is known for attracting and patronizing most any chain restaurant that opens here, this one is not part of a chain and is downtown, no less.
The restaurant is Aglio Ristorante. Owners Amy Johnson and John Sheck and chef Terry Carner are serving Italian fare at 12 S. Main St. They’re open daily except Sundays and feature a lunch menu—including an express menu—and a dinner menu. Walk-ins are welcome, though reservations are recommended. Call 608-563-5118.
Friday night, Cheryl and I found a parking spot right across the street, walked in and got a table promptly without reservations. We enjoyed the décor and ambiance. The restaurant has a fairly large bar, but no one was seated there. Instead, all customers were at dining tables, and it was good to see a decent if not capacity crowd.
The food was good, the portions large—even for my usually big appetite—and the service even better. It’s a little pricier than the average chain restaurant serving Italian food, but you would expect that. Cheryl and I agreed that it’s the type of place where we would consider taking guests from out of town.
As we left, we could still hear the softly playing jazz music outside. All in all, it was a pleasant experience.
I just hope all those critics who complain that Janesville has too few good, unique restaurants give this one a shot.
