Does community have enough rides for seniors?

By GREG PECK ( Contact )   Monday, March 18, 2013 - 4:17 p.m.

Do you have friends or relatives in Rock County who struggle to find rides to medical appointments, grocery stores and other essential destinations? Perhaps you fight this battle yourself.

Various services have been coming and going in Janesville and Rock County in recent years. About 2½ years ago, however, a new service stepped in. It’s the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program of Rock County’s Seniors Volunteering for Seniors Program. Dozens of senior volunteers offer free rides, phone assurance, friendly visits and respite relief to help those ages 55 and older remain independent.

Now, however, even this program is hitting the budgetary wall. That could leave more people waiting longer for services or else paying for rides—and that can be another financial difficulty for those on fixed incomes who often struggle to pay for utilities, food and medicine.

We’ll offer more perspectives on this dilemma in our editorial Tuesday.
