Morel hunting

By ANN MARIE AMES ( Contact )   Tuesday, April 22, 2008 - 8:18 p.m.

My brother, Rob, went looking for morels in the woodsy patch behind our house tonight.

My cat, Luke, came along to help.

We didn't find any. For one thing, I wasn't sure what I was looking for. It was my first time.

It is one of those things I always wanted to do, though. I think we'll go out again this weekend.

I played around on this fun Web site when we got home so I could learn more.

Does anyone have any tips for me?

sevymn--the Basics Cooperative produce department usually sells them when they are in season. I believe they buy them from local foragers.

I'd love to find someone to go mushroom hunting with! I'm new at this and I've never tried a morel mushroom yet. Does anyone know where to sell them?

The back upper trail at Rockport Park has some great spots.

It's a little early yet, need some warm nights that is when they will start popping up quick. Make sure you check around dead elm trees (tend to get better results if all the bark has not fallen off yet) and apple trees. South facing slopes tend to yield well due to facing the sun for warmth. On steep slopes I have noticed that most are at the same height on the slope not many higher or lower, which I'm assuming is where a temperature gradient occurs. I find alot when I am out trout fishing along small creeks, talk about a great meal, fresh trout and morels to go along with it.

oooo morels! The WI Mycological Society leads some very educational forays and they usually have experts on hand to help--here's their website: http://www.wisconsinmycologicalsociety.o...

It looks like they'll be looking for morels in a few weeks--maybe it's too early right now? Doesn't hurt to keep looking, though. You never know what you'll find!
