New option for local buying

By ANN MARIE AMES ( Contact )   Tuesday, April 14, 2009 - 10:58 a.m.

Just for fun this weekend, I poked my head in at the new Country Pride Meats, 109 Church St., Clinton.

Owners Jeff and Kathy Collins opened the processing plant and retail store about a month ago. The brand new building is on Highway 140 on Clinton’s south side, right across the road from the DeLong Co.

I’d written one or two stories about the Collinses’ plans before they opened, and I thought I’d see how things were going.

In a nutshell, the couple have outgrown selling their own meat off their farm and have grown tired of the wait to get meat processed. They opened their own processing facility and retail store in Clinton’s industrial park.

I went in expecting to pay more than what I would for meat at the grocery store. I told myself it would be a one-time treat.

I was wrong. I paid quite a bit less for a pound of ground chuck than I would at the grocery store here in Janesville.

Off the top of my head, I couldn’t compare the prices of all the other cuts, but we also enjoyed a nice, thick pork chop. I seasoned it with fresh oregano.

Much of the meat is locally grown—some of it on Jeff and Kathy’s Clinton Township farm. The family raises beef and hogs.

Jeff and Kathy plan is to process about five of their own animals every week and an additional 15 for customers, Jeff has told me.

Do you have a favorite stop for local meat or produce? Please share.

I loved going with my grandparents to Schradel's. I've never been to the Johnstown meats...I'll head there this weekend. Is there anything at all in Janesville? Phil's closed down years ago and I can't think of anything that's "local". Thanks for the www.spend-local.com link! Good info.

4_2 yes the last I knew they still were. I am pretty sure my parents had an appointment to get a some butchering done within the last couple of months. The "younger" generation (now in thier 50's and 60's lol) are running it. I believe they don't kill as many as they use too.

better than just buying local I buy my Hog's from a local farmer and have the local Locker "Sorg's" in Darien or "Wilson's" in Elkhorn...I used to use Schroedl's for everything. I buy a steer every other year and split with 2-3 other families...

I make the journey every two weeks from Janesville to Sorg's for "good meats." But lately, I've been hankering a trip to the mushroom store - River Valley Ranch Mushroom Farm in Slades Corners (Burlington) - I haven't been in awhile and hope it's still there.

Nothing beats Schradel's Meat Market just outside of Jefferson south of HWY 18.
