A nutrient-rich gift
Last weekend my friend and WCLO reporter Beth Wheelock brought me a gift from her family's Walworth County farm:
Two feedbags full of chicken poop.
Well, not exactly. She brought composted chicken poop, which is quite a bit different.
I happily sprinkled some on my raspberries and around my vegetables. I only started my own compost bin this spring, so it will be months yet before I can use it.
After feeding the garden, I set the bags aside for another day.
Unfortunately, I forgot that if there's one thing you don't need to ration, it's chicken poop.
Beth stopped over today with more compost. We had an awkward moment.
She felt embarrassed for being the girl who was pushing chicken poop on her friends. I felt embarrassed for appearing ungrateful for all the poop.
Thank you, Wheelock family and your prolific chickens. I will go home and spread compost around my garden as if the chickens will make more.
Because they will.

We typically use mushroom compost but heard that chicken poop is equally effective - though I am guessing it may not be cheaper. We paid $30 for a truckload of compost this year. We also use the mushroom compost in our flower beds, which is why we require almost 2 truckloads to cover the garden and the flowers..Do you til it in in the fall or in the spring or both? And can you buy it by the truckload?

We all just wish you wouldn't store the leftovers under your desk...
... because Beth has your next bagful stored under hers. :-P

Heehee.
Yeah, I guess I figured since I was giving you more containers, I should give you something to fill them with. You know, I didn't want you to have to buy soil/compost to put in them.
And you can always just put the bags in your garage for next year. It keeps. Thanks for being so gracious about it!
