By ANN MARIE AMES ( Contact )   Friday, October 16, 2009 - 11:05 a.m.

Apply now for the Isabelle Ames Memorial Scholarship. The $500 scholarship is available to college sophomores and juniors recently involved in 4-H, FFA or the registered Holstein industry. Applicants must be enrolled in a four-year college pursuing a degree in any field. The application form is available from the Wisconsin Holstein Association, 902 Eighth Ave., Baraboo. Call 1-800-223-4269 or visit the association's Web site. Applications are due Nov. 15. Ames is a former owner of Ames-Way Holsteins, Darien.

My grandma Isabelle was a huge advocate of education.

Well, actually, she was tiny. But her spirit and personality were huge.

A teacher by career and by nature, she was a college graduate as were her nine children and most of her 24 grandkids.

Grandma also was an advocate of finishing your milk (and your orange juice), covering your ears in the cold, staying hydrated in the summer and good spelling.

So, I’m gently reminding you to eat your breakfast, wear a hat and study hard. Except for the studying, those activities will have no bearing on your application. But my grandma and yours would want you to be healthy.

Good luck!
