Dad always said blaze orange was my color

By ANN MARIE AMES ( Contact )   Thursday, October 29, 2009 - 2:50 p.m.

It's true.

When I was 12 or 13, my dad bought me a blaze orange sweatshirt and announced it was a good color on me.

I haven't been deer hunting for years, although I was a regular "bow bender" in my teens.

After passing my hunters safety test last night, I plan to go out hunting with my family next month.

The class was just a refresher, by the way. I was already certified.

I'm looking very forward to spending some time in the woods. Just thinking about it brings back a lot of memories of my family.

More about that as the hunting season approaches.

For those of you itching to get out in the woods ... please share your stories. We can all enjoy.

My dad never let me wear orange, ever. As a defiant teenager, I found a blaze orange hunter's cap and proceeded to tramp around in the woods with a stick that looked like a rifle.

I love being in the woods this time of year on a WARM day. Only my hunting skills are more atoned to a CAMERA! LOL.

I can still recall the smell of drying deer blood as the carcass hung from the rafters in our garage. Dad went hunting but never actually shot a deer, that I can recall. The one he brought home from Up North, he hit with a car.

I think my nephew Dan might be the only student at Dartmouth who hunts. When he was younger, he needed an adult to accompany him one morning so he could hunt legally. I got up and hiked up the wooded hill in western Wisconsin, where the hills are STEEP. He was a gazelle, but I was worried about a heart attack. He got one shot at a deer and missed. It was a downhill shot, and I think he didn't account for that, a lesson learned. The roar of that rifle next to me in the stillness of that morning was SO loud. I think my ears are still ringing.
