US Constitution Day - Thursday, September 17
This coming Thursday, September 17, 2009 is the 222nd anniversary of the SIGNING of our US Constitution in 1787!
US law requires every single educational institution which receives FEDERAL $ to observe US Constitution Day. What are YOUR local schools doing? There is really NO enforcement mechanism for this requirement other than the reality of the true assertion, “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty!”
LONG BEFORE the federal requirement became law, I had been observing US Constitution Day because I just plain believe it is VERY, VERY SIGNIFICANT! I included in that observation the requirement of a PREAMBLE quiz which requires the students to MEMORIZE the Preamble and write it out.
WHY the PREAMBLE? It sets for the BASIC motivations/goals for the writing of the Constitution creating a new sovereign nation-state in 1787.
Ratification will come slowly with the hard-fought battle between the FEDERALISTS and the ANTI-FEDERALISTS. It was NEW HAMPSHIRE’s ratification on May 23, 1788 that completed the required nine (9) of the thirteen (13) states of the government under the Articles of Confederation. The Continental Congress proceeded to set up the implementation of the newly ratified US Constitution with the goal of March 4, 1789 to begin the operation of the US government under the Constitution. The remaining four (4) states proceeded to ratify the Constitution with RHODE ISLAND being the last on May 29, 1790. NOTE: This is AFTER the new government had started operating under the new US Constitution. George Washington had already been elected President of the US and inaugurated on April 30, 1789.
Remember: Our US Constitution is the SHORTEST and OLDEST among the WRITTEN constitutions of the sovereign nation-states of the whole wide world. If you want more information, I urge you to read the feature article in Wikipedia, “United States Constitution.”
Even CAPTAIN KIRK of “Star Trek” puts the spotlight on the “Preamble” of our US Constitution, take a look at that segment, “Captain Kirk Preamble.” THANKS to my colleague and friend, Joe Foy, Assistant Professor, UW-Waukesha, author of the very popular book, “Homer Simpson Goes to Washington” (Just released: paperback updated edition, University of Kentucky Press - ISBN: 978-0-8131-9254-3.), for alerting me to this segment which I shall use with my UW-Whitewater and UW-Waukesha classes as we observe US CONSTITUTION DAY this week.
Do you know the six (6) basic goals/motivations the founders identified as to why they did “ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America”? IF NOT, I urge you to look them up, "Preamble to the United States Constitution." What do these goals mean for “US” (meaning “us” and “United States”) today in the 21st century as we observe/celebrate the 222nd anniversary of the signing of our US Constitution?
Here we go… completing this first half of September 2009 on Tuesday, the 15th…
Mr. E.
POSTSCRIPT - TODAY is the anniversary of the writing of the text of our national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner" by Francis Scott Key during the bombardment of the FORT McHENRY in 1814. For more details, read "This Day in History" from the History Channel. Mr. E.

Maybe they could teach how politicians have been shredding this document year after year. I don't know why they don't just burn the thing and right up a "Little Red Book".

OK, I had never heard of Orly Taitz nor of the "Kenya" birth certificate [1]. I went and did something that will shock some of you: I educated myself about it.
Now, I never put much stock in PT Barnum's most famous phrase, nor was I a big fan of Herrnstein & Murray's tome. I may be forced to rethink my position.
Ann Coulter, Sarah Palin, Karl Rove, Pat Buchanan, Michael Leahy, just for starters, believe that it is a forgery.
It is so obviously a forgery that basic FACTS utterly destroy its supposed authenticity. The "document" is dated, quite clearly, 17 February 1964 and the supposed seal is that of the Republic of Kenya.
Except, the Republic did not exist until eleven months later. For almost all of 1964, the official name was the Dominion of Kenya.
Then I poke around for just five more minutes and discover considerable evidence that indicates this is a forgery of an Australian birth certificate.
You're trying to tell us that a dentist from Laguna Beach, California -- the land of fruit and nuts -- found something the following vetting processes did not?
The state election board in Illinois when Obama ran as a state representative.
That the Federal Election Board ignored when he ran for both US Senate and POTUS.
That the Democratic and Republican National Committees both ignored at the start of his POTUS run?
That John McCain, who has had a long-standing ambition to be the POTUS (having run for President in 2008 and 2000 and was on the short list for VP in 1996), did not pursue any legal avenues against Obama during the campaign based on citizenship eligibility?
That Hillary Clinton, who arguably "wanted" the Presidency more than McCain, ignored?
Are you serious? I mean, really, are you serious? Occam's Razor alone cuts you to pieces.
This [2] is the woman into whom you are putting so much faith?

Pete, the web-site http://www.orlytaitzesq.com/ doesn't make any sense as it states that Obama has spent millions to hide his birth certificate, but a quick internet search brings up a scanned copy. Two local newspapers from Honolulu also have record of his birth announcement in 1961. What more evidence is required? I suppose you could say its all fabricated and part of the conspiracy, but where's the evidence for that?

I too would like to hear why there was no conservative backlash to W's deficit spending.
Why also was there no hue and cry from the right about the Department of Homeland Security -- the largest expanse of government since Johnson's Great Society which receives nearly triple NASA's funding -- nor about domestic surveillance? "Rugged individualism" indeed.
These are, of course, rhetorical questions. People either outright left the party in disgust (pun intended) or sat out various elections, often hoping that Republicans would still win and somehow regain their sanity and return to their professed planks of smaller government and smaller taxes.
I voted for W in 2000; he was not a compelling candidate, neither was Gore.
It was fiscal policy first followed by the loss of sane dialog from the Republicans that drove me away from a party of which I had once been a proud member.
I see no compelling reason yet to return to the fold.

While Obama has put us in debt, it is not wrong to ask where were the tea parties when the Republicans were running up deficits? I would love to hear the conservative explanation.
As to the federal government's involvement in affairs not granted to it by the constitution the answer is simple: money! Why did Wisconsin change the drinking age to 21? To get highway funds. The fed will only give states money if they abide by the rules set by the federal government. You don't HAVE to participate in No Child Left Behind, but then you won't get federal funds, which the states cannot live without.

> Obama & Chairman Mao Zedong of China have simular historys. [sic]
Wow. I shouldn't but I have to... let's contrast...
Mao:
- Born to peasants in 1893 in a declining empire
- Han Chinese
- Buddhist
- Enlisted during the 1911 Revolution
- Studied informally after high school
- Did not venture outside his home province until he 25
- Rarely traveled abroad
- Developed Communist worldview around age 30
- Strong interest in the political system, encouraged by his father
- Repeatedly organized millions of peasants, often to arms
- Began installing political officers in military units after the Autumn Harvest Uprising
- Slaughtered ~25% of his own army
- Financed and propped up by the Soviets
- "Led" one side of a civil war; assumed control through violence
- Sent a million poorly armed peasants into Korea
- Played a personal role in ordering mass executions
- Violently redistributed land and wealth
- Frequently purged his own government
- Led China from scattered centers of power to global power
- Ruled China for 27 years
- Ultimately responsible for 40-70 million deaths within his own country (~10% of pop.)
Obama:
- Born into lower middle class in 1961 in a global superpower
- Biracial
- Christian
- No military record
- Traveled abroad as a child
- Developed worldview in college
- Extensive formal education
- Constitutional law scholar and professor
- Repeatedly organized thousands of low-income people to vote or receive job training
- State legislator via legal vote
- US Senator via legal vote
- US President via legal vote
- Constitutionally restricted to two terms of four years
- Other Constitutional restrictions apply
Wow! They're like totally the same person!

The ironic thing is the U.S. Constitution doesn't give Congress the enumerated power (Article 1, Section 8) to require our local schools to do anything, including observing Constitution Day. :) Where ever federal enumerated powers do not apply, states rights and state sovereignty apply with the 10th amendment. So yes, e.g., No Child Left Behind is unconstitutional.

Sorry I don't see the war in Afghanistan and Iraq as war of choice. These extremists attacked the WTC in 1993, and then killed 3000 innocent people on 9-11-2001. I am sorry that the majority of the country has forgotten that day, we are not even allowed to show the images of the planes hitting the towers anymore on mainstream TV. Guess we are doomed to repeat it since we choose to ignore it. I personally watch other sources of news so I will not forget why we are over seas. And don't use the lame war for oil excuse anymore because we have discovered more oil right here in the good ole' USA than exists over in the Middle East, we just cannot or will not go after it because of spotted owls, minnow fish, and the fact that the current US Administration wants to do away with oil consumption all together.

Glock21sf, you might also want to take a look at the root cause for the deficits: a gargantuan tax cut in the middle of two wars of choice. The bank bailout is huge as well, but not in comparison with the structural deficit on GWB's watch. Both Reagan and GHWB's administrations deficit levels were huge. It seems like anytime we spend on rich folks and wars, deficits are not a concern. When money is spent on the little folk, the powerful and their ignorant lackeys go on a rip snorting fit. Some things never change.

He wasn't yelling, he was emphasizing. Nothing wrong with emphasizing that we should be clear on "facts" when spouting off on these blogs. While I am usually bothered by overuse of caps for emphasis in this blog, I do agree that FACTS was an appropriate use of caps, be it yelling or emphasizing (in this particular instance anyways).

Obama has out done any president in the history of this nation deficit wise and at the same time cut military defensive spending, weakening our country, making us more vulnerable for attack and putting the lives of our service men and women in greater peril, get your head out of your butt and stop blaming Bush. The president we have now is at fault, at what point does what Bush done stop being the SOLE reason this country is going to heck in a hand basket?
