Spring Election – Tues., April 5 – Are YOU prepared to cast an informed ballot?
Spring Election – Tues., April 5 – Are YOU prepared to cast an informed ballot?
As you know IF you read my “WE THE PEOPLE” blog regularly, I have delved into the situation with the two candidates for our WI Supreme Court. Be sure YOU have done your homework to cast an informed ballot!
While the only state-wide election on Tues. is our WI Supreme Court, there are numerous local elections, including local school boards, city councils, town boards, etc. I have read regularly reports on the local JANESVILLE elections with school board and city council. Very important campaigns with significant choices to be made among candidates offering real alternatives.
I have made the decision that in spite of a couple requests, it is NOT appropriate for me to blog on those elections since I am not a citizen of the CITY OF JANESVILLE and therefore NOT able to vote in those elections. I reside in the Town of Fulton and we do have our local town board election. The only candidate that I enthusiastically support is DAVID BROWN for re-election to our FULTON TOWN BOARD.
Considering the WI Supreme Court election, I believe that the best endorsement column I have read is that by Janice M. Eisen of Brookfield in today’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “Kloppenburg: Fair and impartial.” I urge you to read it as you make your decision in voting for WI Supreme Court on Tuesday.
I appreciate Janice’s lead into her OpEd column, “Let's deal with the elephant (and donkey) in the room first. There's no denying that people on both left and right are using the state Supreme Court election on Tuesday as a proxy for approval of Gov. Scott Walker's policies. But Walker is not on the ballot in this supposedly nonpartisan election. Incumbent Justice David Prosser and Assistant Attorney General JoAnne Kloppenburg are. We should look at the actual candidates as we decide how to cast our votes.”
I share Janice’s point and consider it significant, “Kloppenburg, Unlike Prosser, who spent 18 years as a GOP Assembly member, two of them as speaker, Kloppenburg is not a politician. She is an experienced lawyer with impeccable credentials and a broad range of experience arguing court cases. She has a truly nonpartisan record, having been a litigator and prosecutor for the state Department of Justice under four attorneys general - two Democrats and two Republicans.”
And then the telling truth, “Prosser says Kloppenburg is unqualified because she has never been a judge. Neither had he before he was appointed to the court and neither had many of our state's and country's most noted jurists. Under Prosser's logic, we shouldn't vote out any incumbent, because he will always have more experience on the Supreme Court than his challenger.” I have reminded readers again and again that David Prosser did NOT have any experience as a judge before Gov. Thompson appointed him to the WI Supreme Court. Until then, he was a very partisan REPUBLICAN politician. He then, as retired US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, asserts about judges like David Prosser, was a politician who put on a black robe.
I, like Janice, am concerned about the ways in which David Prosser has communicated with his REPUBLICAN base. Janice says, “We know that Prosser is not an independent, nonpartisan jurist. We know that from his own words and actions - not to mention the news release from his campaign manager that said he would be a complement to Walker and the GOP-controlled Legislature.”
The partisan communications and networking which Prosser has used with the hope of gaining support was part of former Governor Patrick Lucey's resignation as Honorary co-chair of Justice David Prosser's re-election campaign. Gov. Lucey proceeded to endorse Joanne Kloppenburg. You can use this link to read the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report published last Thursday, March 31, "Lucey resigns as honorary co-chair of Prosser campaign." Gov. Lucey proceeded to endorse Kloppenburg.
I am also concerned, as is Janice, with Prosser’s “hot temper.” She writes, “But Prosser has displayed his hot temper both publicly and privately. More disturbing than his outbursts is Prosser's defense of his use of vicious, violent language toward Abrahamson: He blamed her, saying she is a bully who ‘manipulates’ people. Is Prosser not an adult? Does he not take responsibility for his own actions? He has not demonstrated a judicious temperament.”
I know that I am voting for Joanne Kloppenburg next Tuesday, April 5. How are YOU going to vote?
Are YOU going to vote? Will the voter turnout be as low as that projected by our WI Government Accountability Board about 20% (as usual) or will it reach 30%+ in Rock County as Rock County Clerk Lori Stottler hopes? Is less than 1/3 of eligible voters casting ballots in a general election a healthy voter turnout in our republic? What do YOU think?
Here we go…

Prosser's hometown paper doesn't think much of either candidate, but chooses to endorse Kloppenburg.
"But here's something else that might have been missed amid Wisconsin's recent political ugliness. In 2006, Prosser said that while he was a legislative leader, staffers who worked under his direction did campaign work. He also acknowledged that in his interview with The P-C on March 18.
Here's a member of the highest court in Wisconsin, whose judges are expected to possess unimpeachable integrity, admitting he condoned illegal activity as an elected official.
Again, it was against the law. You'd think Prosser would acknowledge that, even if he didn't agree. But he told The P-C that "it was a different era and public expectations were quite different."

Marty Bell, the head of the Wisconsin State Employees Union makes $165,000.00 per year and Gov Walker makes $140,000.00 - This is about POWER and nothing else because when the unions found out Walker was serious they threw there workers under the bus and said yea - we'll pay more into funds - just don't MAKE MEMBERS PAY DIRECTLY because given the change they will take that extra $100.00 a month vs. giving it to unions. It's the left that can't site one case he ruled on that they oppose. Again Prosser was their number one choice to Thompson. When Democrats were Democrats and not grabbing power and forcing the collection of union dues. Walker and Administration should say okay. We will cancel bill and just simply make unions collect their own dues. Utah did it in 2001 and Indiana did it 2005 - now only 5% still pay union dues on there own.. real choice, real rights. This is all about union power and to think otherwise is foolish.

Prosser's goons must be getting desperate. Did you see the guy parked at K-Mart this weekend at the intersection of Highways 14 and 26? The 2' by 6' sign on his vehicle was very nicely done. It looked professional enough to have been made by someone in the building trades.
What is wrong with these guys? Are they intellectually challenged? Mostly poor or middle- class people shop at K-Mart and the majority of them won't be voting on Tuesday so why park there? Could it be that Prosser's people were trying to influence the vote in Janesville's wealthy Northeast subdivisions? At the least, it was an interesting act of desperation.
Also, wasn't this illegal? The property owner had not given them permission to post that sign on their property. If Prosser's people are willingly ignoring the law, can we afford to have Prosser represent us on the Wisconsin Supreme Court? I think not.

This is what the GOP is doing in Florida now, Scott Walker will probably try this next since we have an "emergency" and all.
-
the governor invoked his emergency powers to order the state Agency for Persons with Disabilities to immediately roll back payments to group homes and social workers by 15 percent — an amount providers say could put them out of business and threaten their clients' safety.
-
"If this were any other workplace, you would consider it a war zone," Wright said. "My staff gets bitten, hit, kicked, spat upon, defecated on, urinated on — for $8.23 an hour. And every time we start talking about giving our guys a pay raise, the governor comes along and cuts the rates."
The center has not had a rate increase for its services since 2005, and it has had several rounds of cuts since then. At the same time, training requirements for staffers have increased.
"The state can cut my rates by 15 percent, but I can't cut my staffing 15 percent or I'll be in violation of staffing ratios," Wright added.

Ha ha, GlennBeck?
That's ten votes for Prosser.
I'm sure that he will do better than that.
I think that I will wait until Tuesday night to declare a winner.

3 Votes from my house and 6 from my neighbors are going to Prosser.
Let’s protect and keep our property, freedom, and liberty. DON’T TREAD ON ME!!
It’s hard to believe so many people will listen to their union. Keep listening and follow them right out of town.
Wake up and stop being sheep.

What a valuable asset the INTERNET has become for our American political culture! I read through the comments re. WI Supreme Court election on Tues. with appreciation for the wide-range of links which readers are posting. Keep up the GOOD work! I've been criticized for putting LINKS into the blog. I do that because as an educator, one of my continuing activities is to refer my students to various sources - those which do agree and those which do NOT agree with me. It is the on-going deliberation which is critical for a healthy republic. The challenge with all of the Internet resources is to be sure that one KNOWS the crebility, veracity, integrity, truthfulness of the source. Here we go... John W. Eyster

Not to pick nits, concerned; in 1998 Prosser was appointed by TT. In 2001 he was elected (running unopposed). Justices serve 10 year terms in Wisconsin, so he is up for re-election this year. His term expires July 31.

Concerned, do you think we should follow the law like Doyle and Obama, or are you talking some other law. You lefties are all about the law til it applies to you.

DavidG: Prosser was not elected. He was appointed under Gov. Tommy Thompson. That's another reason why we need an election.
By the way, it is time for people to stop criticizing Mr. Eyster. You are doing a fantastic job of getting the facts out there for everyone to evaluate on their own.
If you have the courage, you will go to the links that John Eyster gave you. I am sure you will come to the conlusion that we need Kloppenburg!
n_my_opinion: I AM TRULY INFORMED. AND I AM VOTING FOR KLOPPENBURG because I don't want any more shenanigans like our governor has been doing every single day that he has been in the governor's seat. Our beautiful state of Wisconsin will not be able to tolerate any more of Prosser. He is just another spokesperson for Gov. Walker. And we don't need more people NOT OBEYING THE LAW. Don't you think we have enough people in the state of Wisconsin who are not obeying the law? I mean our governor and his Republican legislature, people. Do you condone NOT obeying the law? I don't. All other citizens have to obey the law. That's why I'm voting for Kloppenburg. BECAUSE I WANT OUR GOVERNOR AND HIS REPUBLICANS TO FOLLOW THE LAW TOO, LIKE THE REST OF HAVE TO!

Columns like these should put to rest, the line "THE GAZETTE IS ONLY RIGHT WING", forever. I've never read such nonsense, except from Leonard Pitts.

It was not long ago that I had a sort of independent sense about judicial elections. I thought that judges always came from the ranks of good lawyers and had excellent credentials. I even lived in IL and believed this.
Having moved to Wisconsin a few years ago, I scratched off that mindset. It seems that this state is mired in the residual actions of the last GOP governor as well as some financial actions of the last Democratic one. The state needs to get out of this partisan mess and return to a form of rational governance that is free of outside influence by big money. Speaking of outside influence, I hear that American Crossroads, Karl Rove's group with pockets lined by his Texas oil friends, is running commercials in our state.
One way to do this is to elect judges who have NOT been part of the political game. I can't even imaging a WI Supreme Court decision of the state assembly vs anybody in which Judge Prosser participates in the discussion. He is totally biased in the direction of the Republican's position and he always has been. I have no idea how he managed to get elected in the first place but should he win this one, he cannot possibly remain on any case that comes out of this recent budget mess. If he does chose to participate, he should be kicked out of his high perch by a federal judge.

Another wonderfully useful post by Eyster.
Just as ancient mariners had the Pole Star, or North Star, Eyster serves with absolute reliability as the Left Star, or Wrong Star. Had I been at all on the fence about Tuesday's election, this would have settled it for me. When he says Walker is wrong, I know he's right. When he says Obama is right, I know he's wrong. When he says Prosser is the worst guy for the job, and Kloppenberg is non-partisan, I know for a certainty that Kloppenberg will be a radical liberal, and Prosser is our only hope.
If the Left Star ever says the sun is going to rise in the east, you can be sure the end is near.

Excellent links wilady! They helped me make up my mind on who to vote for in the race.
I rarely read the garbage that John E. writes but decided to see if he is capable of writing about the election without all of the liberal nonsense. Guess not!
