Happy 50th Birthday, President Barack Obama!
Happy 50th Birthday, President Barack Obama!
TOP TEN & WINNER POSTED ONLINE - The winner of the Obama’s Birthday Cartoon Caption Contest.
This morning I looked for the TOM TOLES political cartoon in the WASHINGTON POST because I have been MUCH interested in his “Tom Toles's Cartoon Caption Contest: Obama’s Birthday Edition.”
I confess, I expected to see the BIRTHDAY CARTOON first thing this morning. NOT! What caption did YOU think of IF you looked at that contest?
YOU may have checked on that contest which I linked in my WE THE PEOPLE blog posted last Saturday when I used a TOM TOLES cartoon as the title, "YOU FIRST!" "'You first!' Debt-ceiling Deadline: 3 days - 14 hours - 43 minutes - 21 seconds and counting!"
The deadline was at 5 pm ET (4 pm CT) yesterday. Tom posted the he would be “sifting & winnowing” through the entries and then post the special 50th Birthday cartoon sometime on Thursday, 8/4 – TODAY! UPDATE: The top 10 with winner were posted at 11:55 am ET on Thurs., 8/4 - President Obama's 50th Birthday. The access link is: "The winner of the Obama’s Birthday Cartoon Caption Contest." Take a look. What is YOUR comment on Tom Toles' choice?
Interesting to read about the BIG 50th BIRTHDAY celebration for BARACK OBAMA, President of the USA in CHICAGO last evening. I suggest you use this link to read the Washington Post’s feature article, “At Obama’s birthday party in Chicago, a warm embrace from die-hard supporters.” Several complementary features are published with links online with the article.
My audacity of hope was buoyed by the message shared at the end of David Nakamura’s Post feature article, “’No matter how tough a week I had in Washington, I know you’ve got my back,’ he told the crowd in the ballroom. ‘When I travel to Chicago and across the country, I know we can’t be stopped.’
“But, he said, ‘it is going to continue to be challenging every step of the way.’
“Someone yelled from the floor: ‘But we can do it!’
“’We can do it,’ the president confirmed.”
I am HOPEFUL! What do YOU hope for?
Here we go…

mzat74, you make the same mistake most economic neophytes make when it comes to talking about the national debt -- that is using raw numbers instead of looking at it as a percentage of GDP. I refer you to the graph at the URL given below. Please note the run-up after World War 2 and the subsequent run-down over the next seven presidents -- including Kennedy, Johnson and Carter. Now, please focus your beady little eyes (no, not you Mouse, but mzat74) on the year 1981 when Mr. Reagan lowered tax rates on the wealthiest of Americans. Since then, Reagan and Bush 1 have more than doubled debt to GDP, Clinton lowered it, Bush 2 absolutely skyrocketed it and the final word is still out on the Obama presidency. Enjoy perusing the graph and sorry for destroying every adolescent economic myth you'd learned from FAUX Noise.

And mzat74, about the "die-hard Democrat" question... I vote for candidates I feel will best represent my positions. And believe me, the nominating process used by both major parties pretty well assures I won't be voting for either of their candidates.

Poobah,
The total national debt increased by 4.9 trillion under Bush for 8 years, and has increased 3.9 trillion in 32 months under Obama. If the same spending continues, Obama will have surpassed what happened durring the 8 year Bush presidency in less than 4 years under his presidency.

Kind of funny how many on the right are making a very BAD comparison to the US being on the path of Greece. Some clown, chick-republican strategist, kept saying that on one of the Fox shows the other day...
.
Well, not to get into all the finer points of how it's NOT, but the biggest reason we are not even close to being a Greece, is that we can print our own money to monetize our debt (QE1-2, and soon 3-4-5-6-7 as we head to a deeper and deeper recession)..Greece can not print their own money. They are part of the Euro zone-Euro currency, and can't print Euro's. They have no control over their monetary policy after they moved away from the Drachma. As I keep telling you all, our policy is to PRINT OUR WAY OUT of the mess via MONETARY policy and NOT tax or spending policy (something that is impossible to do at this point). All that is just one GIANT diversion to get the two sides fighting to distract from the real demon...That being the unchecked unaccountable, tower of power...The federal reserve.

You can actually get around even $$$ on Obama to win in 2012 now on most all the exchanges, and likely out there in NV to. In a few weeks you may actually get BETTER then even money.. I personally love the bet. I would never take you up (not that I am a "right winger"...I hate both parties), because I think Obama wins pretty easy. He has a MASSIVE war chest of well over $1 billion, TONS of big $$$ friends on wall street, and unbelievable organization on the ground. Plus people are still mesmerized by the guy; like a modern day Stalin as poster "no" referenced...
I seriously believe that even if the economy sinks into a depression, he will be re-elected. So yeah; if someone wants a dime of action with you, I'd say you are at the advantage if anyone takes you up on it.

reload, this economy started failing in the early 1980's after Reagan dropped tax rates on the top tax bracket from 70% to 28%. Look at our debt as a percentage of 30 years before 1980 and 30 years after 1980. Bush ran up these large deficits and you're blaming Obama. Good luck with that...

And about your statement that money being earned with hard work... Please do tell us, how hard do you think the mortgage bankers worked who knowingly sold and re-purchased mortgages to unqualified persons? Yet, YOUR solution is to give the money to them -- just as the politicians in Washington did! I'm quite certain the people who lost their homes to foreclosure -- AFTER the fat cats got their bad assets paid for by YOU -- worked much harder for their money and in a much more honest and ethical way than the bankers.

bigchip, you are correct that the problem is implementation (and I add passage) of policies that are costing more than they save. That is why Obama and the Democrats should have stood up to the conservative wingnuts and implemented single payer health care for everyone (replacing Medicare, Medicaid and state-sponsored programs). They also should have fixed the mortgage crisis by giving that money to the mortgage holders to pay help them pay their loans and not to the bankers who knowingly issued and purchased bad debt and then foreclosed on these homeowners. The problem isn't trying to do too much, it's settling for too little. Obama has now lost most of his political capital, lost significant portions of his base and probably is in bad shape going in to 2012. The good news is that the Republicans have nobody except flip-flopping wingnuts and RINO's that will self-destruct once nominated.

Can we get beyond Bush? He ran up debt recovering from 9/11, 2 wars, drugs for seniors (Ted Kennedy co-sponsored) and no child left behind. BTW - he made the same mistake his dad did - he was sucked into going with the dems (drugs for seniors) and the dems kicked him to the road and are still kicking him.
Ok - contrast the role of government spending under Bush and Obamacare, Stimulus, Regulatory Overdrive. Can Obama quite pointing a finger anywhere but at himself?

I'll take your points one by one,
"Did President Bush not start with a surplus?"
No. while there was a projected surplus in the latter years of the Clinton Administration it did not appear in reality. One of the contributing reasons was the collapse of the tech bubble.
.
"Did 9/11 not happen on his watch?"
While it was easy to connect the dots in the aftermath of 9/11 our intellegence agencies did not have the mechanism to connect those dots before 9/11. Exactly what could have President Bush done to prevent 9/11?
.
"Were the economic conditions when he left office the worst since the Great Depression?".
While the left likes to project the bad economy of 2008 on President Bush's entire time in office, for the most part the economy was robust during his terms. There was full employment and rapid growth from 2003-2007. The groundwork for the 2008 downturn was laid many years before. In addition the takeover of Congress by the democrats in 2006 put the brakes on some of Bush's economic ideas.
.
"Did he not fail to balance the budget?"
Balancing the budget is a function of the Congress. The only reason Bush failed to balance the budget is because he was not given a bill to sign by Congress.
.
"Did he not fail to put the 2 wars on the books?"
Financing wars is a function of Congress. They approved the funding.
.
"Did the middle-class not SHRINK/"
No
.
All of my answers can be verified by either a Google search or a basic knowledge of how government functions.

bebe53, You forgot to mention that he also failed to keep his party in power in the House of Representatives coming out of the 2010 elections. Under his Presidency, it should have been a walk for the Democrats with the kind of popular support that swept him into office in 2008. That monumental failure alone should have the DNC party bosses sucking down antacids going into 2012.

So, John, do these posts answer your question? We're not feeling quite as warm and fuzzy about Mr. Obama's tenure in the White House as you seem to be. It would be helpful if he actually exhibited leadership or decision making skills--or any kind of skills, for that matter. So far, not so much. He has surrounded himself with a lot of "czars," and takes a great photo--and apparently plays pretty good games of golf and basketball and has a lovely family. Other than that, I think he's been an abysmal President. But "Happy Birthday." There ya go.

I was going to drive down with the Mrs. to wish him a happy birthday, but then remembered I wouldn’t have $38,500 left after paying for gas and tolls. I was distraught. So I thought I’d go solo, checked my wallet, but I was a tad shy of the required $10,000. Then I became totally despondent, until suddenly, it occurred to me: I can wait until his 52nd birthday, when he’ll be a private citizen, and then I can wish him happy birthday for free! Ah, happiness returns!
Just think, if all the attendees, who being devout liberals are required to firmly believe in higher taxes, had skipped the festivities and sent that money as a donation to the Treasury instead. OK, it’s still a spit in the ocean, but at least they’d be doing something useful.
