Is the lesson of DEMOCRACY being learned by Scott Walker?
Is the lesson of DEMOCRACY being learned by Scott Walker? Hopeful, but NOT optimistic!
I believe that WE THE PEOPLE of WI owe a major THANK YOU to the 14 DEMOCRATIC SENATORS as well as the thousands of persons who protested Scott Walker’s budget repair bill handed down (I use this term because it is used when there is a FINAL authority articulating, e.g., GOD at Mount Sinai or the US Supreme Court) his budget repair bill on Friday, the 11th of February 2011 with the order that it be passed by the WI State Legislature by Friday, the 18th of February.
FORTUNATELY, the 14 DEMOCRATIC SENATORS escaped FROM WI so that everyone was FORCED to study the Governor’s budget repair bill. And, the large numbers of demonstrators at our WI State Capitol persuaded/motivated the REPUBLICAN members of our WI State Legislature to STUDY carefully ALL of the provisions in the budget repair bill.
Isn’t it AMAZING all of the facets which Walker built into this QUICKIE bill?! What was the MOST surprising facet to YOU? I dare to HOPE that all of our WI state legislators – both REPS and DEMS – are carefully studying the Governor’s WI State Budget proposal for 2011-2013. Again, we are finding numerous facets.
Consider the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's editorial, "Patch Walker's request" focusing on the need to carefully consider Gov. Walker's proposal on transportation in WI. What do YOU think?
I myself am OFFENDED by the PUBLIC POLICY issues which the Governor put into both bills. Year-after-year there has been criticism of putting PUBLIC POLICY into state budget bills. When the DEMS are in the majority, it is the REPS complaining? When the REPS are in the majority, it is the DEMS complaining? HYPROCRISY! I honestly wish that all of our politicians would follow the appropriate process created to IDENTIFY and REMOVE public policy facets from state budget bills! WHY NOT?!
I am convinced that Scott Walker is maturing as a political leader as he realizes that he was NOT elected “KING OF WI.” Rather, he was elected to be a GOVERNOR – that means a governing LEADER who provides healthy leadership. HEALTHY LEADERSHIP always includes conversation, negotiation and compromise! Again, WHY did Scott not consider US President Gerald Ford’s wise advice, “Compromise is the oil which makes governments go.” Note: Gerald Ford was a REPUBLICAN, Scott.
Today’s report on page 1 of the Gazette provides some HOPEFUL information and I am among those who HOPE that Walker is maturing so that there will be more significant communication and REAL COMPROMISE! The cost for this situation is very high! Consider loss of MORALE! Consider reduced productivity! I continue to have a sense that Walker has CLOSED WISCONSIN to BUSINESS for now.
DO NOT MISS the political cartoon by PHIL HANDS in today’s Gazette! Or, take a look at the original published in the Wisconsin State Journal last Monday, March 7, “Hands on Wisconsin: The Guv in the Hat”! POIGNANT and INCISIVE political OpEd. See it! What do YOU think of Phil Hands’ comment via the political cartoon? Always: A graphic/picture is worth a 1,000 words – actually, I think MORE like 10,000 words!
I am not allowed to provide a link to the Gazette article re. the e-mails obtained by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel using an open-records request, so, I encourage you to read the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s feature article published yesterday, “E-mails reveal possible Walker concessions on union bill.” Valuable information and perspective.
I am persuaded that IF Walker had been able to railroad his WI budget repair bill through our WI State Legislature as he originally strategized, we would NOT have had any meaningful democratic process. NOW, the evidence is very clear that WE THE PEOPLE of WI are sharply divided. This means that the Governor and members of our WI State Legislature MUST review and consider what WE THE PEOPLE of WI are willing to accept.
For additional information, I encourage you to read the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s feature published last Sunday (March 6, 2011), “Opinions polls show sharp divisions on Walker.” Be sure to check the valuable graphics on the polls complementing this article.
I dare to HOPE that our SITUATION in WI on the IDES of MARCH – that’s next Tuesday, the 15th of March – is safer for WE THE PEOPLE of WI than it was for CAESAR. Remember: “Beware the IDES!” I am sure y you studied Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” – did YOU? IF you want more information about the ”Ides of March,” I suggest you use this link to the Wikipedia feature article.
As we approach THE IDES OF MARCH next Tuesday, March 15, 2011, I say to WE THE PEOPLE of WI, “Beware the IDES!” Forewarned is forearmed!
I think it is VERY IMPORTANT that our DEM 14 carefully consider the IDES of March warning! "Beware the IDES!" After what we KNOW from Gov. Walker's own words, DEMS must be careful NOT to buy a "pig in a poke" or TRUST Gov. Walker and the REPS. So far, I have not observed that Scott Walker, the EAGLE SCOUT, is "TRUSTWORTHY" and all the other qualities of a Boy Scout (at least back when I was a Boy Scout). Time will tell.
I dare to HOPE that this whole episode has provided needed life experience so that our Governor and WI state legislature have learned a very crucial lesson about DEMOCRACY! We are, after all, as guaranteed by our US Constitution, a REPUBLIC! Don’t forget that Gov. Walker!
Here we go…

Democracy was enforced last November when the people voted change. The change was necessary since spending was out of control. Gov. Walker is doing what he was elected to do, and Gov. Doyle was unable to do - control spending.

WHO IN THE HECK IS GOING TO KEEP PAYING FOR THESE UNIONS WHEN THE REST OF US ARE GETTING LAID OFF OR NOT GETTING RAISES TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF THE PUBLIC WORKERS. I'm tapped out. I have no more to give. Deal with it.

John, of course events since you wrote this blog have indicated that no, criminal Walker is not "learning the lesson of DEMOCRACY." But as you stated you were not optimistic.
We will continue to expect the worst from this Walker criminal. However, with elections coming up in the not too distant future, we will soon have a chance to punish the Republicans and their ilk.
Also, it will be recall time for this creature in a few months. Paybacks can be a ***ch.

Despite his current bizarre behavior, John Eyster was once a fine teacher. I will choose to think of him in those terms rather than the embittered person he has become. Like all of us, John Eyster has been blessed with many many blessings. Sadly, he has forgotten what he once said in the classroom and on Washington Seminar. Keep those memories.

Of course not. Republicans do not believe in Democracy. But then neither do Democrats. We do not have a Democract at the state or federal level. Kudos to the Senate Democrats for their clever and HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL strategy to stop Walker in his dictatorial tracks It has made the rest of America take notice. The more they keep the Governor at bay, the more incensed America is becoming with his bullying "my way or the highway" tactics.

Yes John we are a representative republic and right now there are 14 senate districts that aren't be represented at the seat of government. You are a complete phony/hypocrite when it comes to the right of representative government. In the 15th Senate district, everyone is not being represented and cannot be without our Senator in Madison. It works this way Mr. Government Expert: A bill is introduced, hearings, debates,
amendments if necessary and a vote up or down. If our Senator wants to vote no on this, let him come back to Madison and do so.
It's a simple process and difficult for me to understand? I've seen you respond with comments here. Would you please do so!

So if I read this correctly, the way the system is supposed to work is:
If I don’t like the bill I run and hide
If I don’t agree with the bill everyone else is an idiot
If I was hired to do a job and suddenly it becomes difficult to do what needs don't I get paid and don’t show up for work.
What kind of BS is this?
And who taught you to use capital letters in places they should not be used, if you have to resort to capitols to get your point across maybe you should writ better in the first place.

John - you are a living example of how broken the system is. You tout your experience as a registered lobbyist. You were a lobbyist paid by The School District of Janesville (aka - the taxpayers). At the same time you are a retired teachers (retirement funded by the same folks). You were in fact double dipping with both dips paid by the taxpayers. The fantasy world of one level of government paying a lobbyist to gain influence with another level of government is beyond belief.

John---It is really too bad that the regular naysayers to your blog somehow believe the Koch Brothers are in Wisconsin to help them. . Proartist and relax recognize that Governor Walker's methods will cost Wisconsin more money and his Budget Repair Bill will result in the same fiascos as his Milwaukee County Executive Budgets failed. These same naysayers would disagree with you if you showed simple math problems such as 2+2 =4. They'd figure out a way to make you think it was not correct because it was not a base 10 sum.

If you all had paid attention in school- The United States of America is a republic type of government that uses the form of democracy. Perhaps some research before spouting.
-
Long_Time- Every citizen of the state has representation currently. Those that believe one way have the people at the capitol representing them. Those that believe the other way are represented by the people working in Illinois.
-
I have my Gadsden flag flying, as that was what this country started with. Research that and it's history too. You'd see similarities.

All you have left, John, are personal attacks on Governor Walker? Enough of your flip-flop flim-flam. Perhaps have YOU learned anything about democracy? For example, collusive bargaining is anti-democratic. When elected officials and unions conspire to give unsustainable wages and benefits to public employees in return for getting re-elected but paid for by all taxpayers, isn't that a corrupt bargain that rigs the system and dilutes "we the people?" Also, isn't mandatory public employee union membership anti-democratic? A person is qualified and bright, but they can't get the job unless they join the union? Is that not outrageous? Is the right to work not a basic fundamental human right? We have the right to assemble under the First Amendment, but do we not also have a fundamental right not to be forcibly assembled? It appears your superficial analysis has been arrested at your high school teaching level and isn't quite (or you've refused) capable of digging into these matters with appropriate rigor.

This is precisely why parents and property taxpayers are upset; How do parents teach it is not OK to run away from responsibility when elected lawmakers run away and are then praised by opinion leaders and school teachers?
*
Is this not a "taxation without representation" teaching moment?
*
And remind me again why WI has over 400 school districts, each with its own highly paid superintendent? Why does each and every school need its own highly paid principal and vice principal?
*
And what do school boards do, other than spend the great percentage of their time negotiating teacher contracts - they finish one, and they begin working on the next contract. All the while being elected to their positions by the very professional union edu-crats that reap the benefits of collective bargaining.
*
Take an audit of every school board in WI and I would predict the great majority come from a public union background.
*
And the tech schools? MATC is spending $100+ MILLION of tax dollars to expand campuses, yet there is no elected school board to oversee their ciriculums and facilities.
*
Given the direction of this blog, I am not convinced we benefit from teachers with 20+ years in the classroom -- perhaps the key is more turnover to keep the classroom fresh and free from the flavor this blog promotes.

What reason could governor Walker have for learning a lesson in democracy? In case he moves to a country where they have that form of government? Will you, John, learn a lesson in the form of government called a Constitutional Republic? That way you will be educated in the form of government of the United States of America. Will you learn not to make a fool of yourself with a statement that a man needs to learn a lesson that makes it glaringly obvious that you are lacking in a most basic education yourself? Also, have you ever read the constution? I assure you that you are no expert in the constitution. Lastly, the city of Janesville has many computer consulting businesses. John-
Well, you could handle it for one, single, blog in a row. Last blog...completely readable. Did not necessarily agree with everything you said, but you at least had a shot at meaningful dialogue because I was able to read your thoughts.
This blog...back to the unreadable, capitalization randomly all over the place, drivel that you consider a well-written blog. Perhaps you simply want to write to the narrow group that is willing to wade through such an atrocious writing style. I am not. I am done reading your drivel. Hopefully, the Gazette will remove you as a blog and make room for someone that has a legible writing style. Whether I agree with the point of view or not.

I voted for an aggressive change in spending, last November. I expected aggressive change and un-serving Senators are attempting to derail it with corruption of the legal system. Existing economic policies and spending philosophy have not worked. Many winning votors believe that the sharp decline in so many economic health measurements prove the system is not working the last two years. Record foreclosures, bankruptcies, joblessness and debt (both personal and public) have gone from the worst ever, to now the worst ever by far. The printing of money and spending our way out of this trouble should not be fed by the same attitude. We have spent money we didn't have. Pay it back AND stop the spending habits that caused the deficits. Those that resist are a destructive part of the problem, regardless how they cry.

Democracy is FAR more than just going out to vote a couple times a year. It's constant awareness. It's searching out information. It's talking and sharing with others - not being afraid to discuss politics! It's personally getting to know your legislators. And, most importantly, it IS taking ACTION even if that means marching with your feet. Participation demands more than a comment board and more than believing the myths of the media (come on, "just students" or "union thugs"...you believe that, REALLY????). Trying to frame the lies, threats, and current illegal actions of our Governor and his GOP lackeys in the newest truly creative "Obama re-election" TV ads sponsored by the national GOP is nothing more than ignoring what is really happening. I suggest you come to Madison, look into the faces of very real Wisconsin citizens who are gravely concerned, and learn that "This IS what Democracy looks like!" Thank you, Wisconsin 14 for providing the time that more may learn more and debate Walker's truly ruthless budget plans that will gut our state in ways far more dire and disturbing than just union busting.
